AirStreaming

AirStreaming An opportunity for musicians and character driven folks to share their talents and stories with a te Airstreaming has been a vision for over a decade.

Having converting vintage RVs-- a 1967 Airstream Overlander trailer and 1968 Goldline Camper-- into a broadcasting and production studio, we are now able to travel to festivals, event and other on-site locations to create live and recorded broadcasts of musicians who would not otherwise have the opportunity of being recognized for their talent. Even before raising her own six children, Joani Herro

n was working with kids. As a third generation media maker, she began working in theatre, photography and broadcasting while still in her teens. Her 'Behind The Curtain' and 'Behind The Lens' programs allow kids of every age to participate in hands-on, experience-based, character driven productions for stage and screen and the 'Behind The Lens Kids' Film Festival' has provided a unique way of showcasing their films. Joani, who lives on Gabriola Island, produces and hosts a radio show on CHLY 101.7 FM and is the producer for The Show on Shaw TV as well as several other television and web based programs. She is pursuing an undergraduate degree at VIU, majoring in Digital Media Studies and has designed a directed studies program based on her innovative mobile broadcasting and live streaming studio. Housed in vintage Airstream and Goldline RVs, the studio provides full on location production services for events, workshops, festivals and interviews for both pre-recorded and live television, radio and internet-based broadcasts. The amazing part of this directed studies project is that we students are producing the show, uniting musicians of various backgrounds and genres in a setting that will allow them to let the creative juices flow. The interviews include stories from the road, from the stage and behind the scenes as well as featuring the inspiring and brave folks who are making a difference in the world. Whether talking about the song writing process, inspiring musicians with tips and tricks to master their technique or highlighting the amazing people behind the stories in our own community and around the globe, you'll want to tune in to Airstreaming on CharacterDriven TV.

Last update I mentioned that Nathan had accepted a position at a resort on Galiano Island. Since that time he was scouted by one of Canada's most amazing fishing resorts on Denny Island off Bella Bella. Below is a link to the page where Nathan is being introduced as chef at the Shearwater Resort.

Meanwhile, you'll be able to order online beginning on Thursday. I'll publish the link in a separate post along with the latest news.

Shearwater Resort is an Indigenous wilderness resort in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. Owned and operated by Heiltsuk Nation.

Well, this has definitely been a summer of twists and turns for the Moveable Feast. After the ordeal of last month when we found a crack in the frame of the Airstream- and the amazing commitment required to do the repair- we were able to get food trailer to Silva Bay Marina a few days after July 1st- our anticipated opening date. All seemed well until I received a message from Silva Bay Marina management, the key statement being: "After discussing with the team, we regret to inform you that we can no longer provide the promotional weekly rate. This rate was based on a commitment to fulfill the agreed operation dates, which has not been met."

We were hoping to arrive at a solution. The marketing team was going ahead with the promotion we discussed after getting to Silva Bay Marina. I had a great working relationship with the staff members we were working with last year so things seemed to be moving ahead-- Nathan serving customers while I took care of the contract issues. He has borne with us during the delay in opening, however yesterday he was approached by the management during service and told that there was a liability issue with the food trailer being open without a contract in place, meaning that he needed to close.

There are several new aspects to the contract that was presented after we moved the food trailer into place. This, added to the messages and incidents that have taken place while on site, are concerning enough that we took the trailer back to Moveable Feast headquarters to avoid any further stress and to not involve ourselves in what seemed to be turning into an unsavory situation. We have built a reputation for integrity and good service as well as having had a very positive working relationship with Silva Bay Marina in the past and are not interested in getting further involved in a negative situation.

Nathan is a sought-after chef and has been offered various positions which he turned down to be part of the Moveable Feast this summer. Under the circumstances I agreed that it would be best for him to take advantage of another opportunity where he was needed right away. Although this is another disappointment, like the other decisions that have had to be made in the past month or so, it is the most reasonable and sensible way of handling another curve ball. I don't want to say more here, but over my many decades in business, using the 'character driven' approach I created many years ago, my communications have always been open and transparent. That will continue to be the case going forward.

Everyone was so excited to see us open and it's heartbreaking to be making this post, but we are community members and family first and make our decisions based on those priorities. We are always open to changes and have tried our best to work things out, but yesterday's events caused us to step back and turn our attention to the myriad other ways that we can serve our customers.
Please bear with us as we reconfigure. I would simply like to get back to serving my amazing customers and look forward to giving you an update very soon.

Can't thank you enough Lee Milham. Your talents and skills are boundless and we couldn't have opened the Moveable Feast this year without you! Just want everyone to know that I owe this guy a huge debt of gratitude and look forward to being able to serve folks at Silva Bay Resort & Marina when I take over from Nathan on Thursday. I also want to give a shout out to my son Aaron for helping us over the finish line and coming back to clean up after a month-long push to get the Airstream back in shape. We have a few more details to work on, but nothing that affects service so come visit us on any day other than Tuesday and Wednesday. 🥳💐❤

This is a quick update on the Moveable Feast opening. We had a serious situation with the underbelly of the Airstream. It is extremely difficult to find the right person to deal with the structure of the trailer which is more like an aircraft in the way the shell is integrated with the frame. When we had an air conditioner issue last summer Lee Milham came to the rescue and, like a needle in a haystack, he is the one person who has the combination of understanding and skills needed for the job. I couldn't possibly list his many talents here, but suffice it to say, each one has been vital to the upgrade, truly making this a "one man job".

Apart from the recent push to finish the project where my amazing son Aaron came up from Victoria to lend his talents- working with Lee all night at one point to meet the deadline- this truly has been a one-person situation. When a crack was discovered in the frame the repair involved not only specialized welding, but Lee's understanding of how the whole structure functions. It has been a painstaking process and one that was fraught with almost insurmountable challenges, but we've almost made it to the finish line, albeit a few days past our goal. There is one last obstacle that is being addressed at I write. I am praying, as I have been for the past few days, that it goes off without a hitch (trailer humour, sorry) and we will be back at Silva Bay to serve you for the summer season.

I have fielded so many question from loyal followers of the Moveable Feast page so thought it best to write this update. The food trailer is better than ever and we're excited to see it coming to completion, even though my polishing project is still underway. We've focused on the important stuff and will keep on making improvements now that we're working on a firm foundation.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we uncovered the issues that had to be addressed, all very unexpected but very necessary. A huge shout out again to Lee- the hero in this saga. Many thanks to Aaron for dedicating his Canada Day weekend to the project. He has been dealing with his own challenges as his wife faces a cancer diagnosis and treatment. The road has been very rough so far, but we are happy to say that it appears to be much smoother on all fronts.

Stay tuned for an imminent announcement!
