Just days before Yulin’s controversial dog meat festival kicks off, one of the slaughterhouses that supplied it has shut down for good. The facility, run by a man using the pseudonym Huang, had killed over 15,000 dogs since 2007 before agreeing to close under a legally binding deal with Vshine Animal Protection Association and Humane World for Animals (formerly Humane Society International).
Nine dogs were rescued from the property — including three still wearing collars, clear signs they were stolen pets, now named An An, Moli, and Lian. The owner said he’d been killing dogs for nearly 20 years and felt relieved to leave the business behind . The Yulin festival, which has been condemned for animal cruelty, pet theft, and public health risks, kills around 3,000 dogs over roughly 10 days each year . One down, many more to go.
