🚗💥 “Nah b’y, I’ll just park right here in the middle of the street — should be fine.” 😅

Huge thanks to one of our viewers for sending in this award-winning performance in downtown confusion.

They’re just trying to get home when they roll up on a car camped out in the middle of the road like it’s waiting for a donair and a double-double. No hazards, no movement — just parked there like it’s Saturday at Costco. 🛒⛔

Suddenly — boom — the mystery machine throws it in reverse, nearly backing into them like it forgot it wasn’t in a Tim Hortons drive-thru. 🚗🌀

And just when you think it couldn’t get more Halifax… they slowly roll forward again, rip a full U-turn, and casually drive off like that was the plan all along. Probably heading to their buddy’s place in Dartmouth to explain what just happened. 🤷‍♂️

No signal. No clue. Full commitment.
Classic Halifax driving energy.

🎥 Thanks again to the viewer for capturing this chaotic ballet of “what in the HRM was that?”

Why the Zipper Merge Doesn’t Work in Nova Scotia

Let’s clear something up about the “zipper merge” — the idea that drivers should stay in both lanes until the merge point and then take turns merging like a zipper. While it can work in theory and in places where it’s taught and understood, the reality in Nova Scotia is very different.

Here’s the issue:

🚫 It’s not taught in Nova Scotia driver education.
🚫 It’s not mentioned anywhere in the Nova Scotia Driver’s Handbook.
🚫 Most drivers here have never even heard of a zipper merge.

You simply cannot expect people to follow a rule or driving method they were never taught, never tested on, and never made aware of. As a result, what happens on our roads is confusion, frustration, and unnecessary road rage when someone tries to “zipper” and others see it as “cutting in line.”

Until the province includes proper education on this technique — in schools, handbooks, or even public safety campaigns — we can’t expect it to magically work here. That’s just the reality.
