Hangman Also Die, written by two of the original ANTIFA members, Bert Brecht and Fritz Lang, who also produced and directed this 1943 USA film. That sign sure is chillingly relevant.

After Lance Dingman died this past July 2025, his family generously allowed me to have the spelling game he created decades before in the workshop at what was then called the Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital. In my documentary, Unimaginable, Lance demonstrates the game and in so doing reveals so much about his wonderful mind. Come see Unimaginable Sun Sept 21, 4pm for a tribute screening. In the centre of Canada lies the heart of great Canadian film. Happy 50th Winnipeg Film Group Festival!

Following the WFG’s We’re Still Here: 50 Years of the Winnipeg Film Group archival exhibition commemorating the organization’s half-century of history, the artist-run centre continues its anniversary celebration with a week-long film festival that reflects the bold, independent spirit that has defined it since 1974.

The festival is both a celebration and a glimpse of a selection drawn from the vast collection of the Winnipeg Film Group (WFG) archives and the countless works created by past and present member filmmakers.

It is not, and could never be, a complete portrait of everything that has been made here. Rather, it is a constellation of moments: premieres, rediscoveries, and encounters that reflect the diversity, creativity, and persistence of the many artists who have passed through the WFG.

Each film chosen carries with it echoes of a wider community of filmmakers whose work continues to shape and enrich the cultural landscape, here and beyond.

Running September 23–28, 2025 at the Dave Barber Cinematheque, the program includes premieres, guest programmers, filmmaker talks, and special events that honour both the history and the future of independent cinema in Winnipeg.

Thank you to our festival sponsors Canada Council for the Arts and the Winnipeg Foundation for their generous support.

Thank you to the Dave Barber Memorial Fund donors, and the funds contribution to the special commission films.

Thank you to our donors, members, and community of supporters. Your commitment makes it possible for the Winnipeg Film Group to continue nurturing bold, independent voices.

Beer Store on Barton is from the first roll that I started shooting for a series about Barton St. E in Hamilton. I shot this on my Rolleicord loaded with outdated 120 FP4 Ilford Plus, 100 asa B&W film. This is the scan as it came back from . I look forward to when the negatives arrive, but to tell you the truth I'm loving the look as is. I plan explore printing options. Shout out to Rooneys Cafe for having a drop box service with great coffee and bagels.
