Most of my time in Lake Superior Provincial Park has been on the big lake itself: hikes with stunning views, paddles along dramatic cliffs. But stepping into the interior backcountry was something else entirely.
It was quieter here. Wilder.
Over 3 nights and 4 days of travel, we saw just one other person on a multi-day trip and a single day paddler and then nothing but still water and dense forest. It was beautiful but it took time to get used to the complete stillness and vast wilderness.
Two “old women” tripping our way to and from Old Woman Lake. The portages were no joke; muddy, slippery, and steep. In total, we portaged our boards and gear 18 km and paddled 16 km.
Because this area is off the beaten path, we were lucky to be able to tweak our trip based on the weather and our energy levels. We did not make it as far as we had originally planned but used this trip as a start and scouting trip.
This trip was rugged, humbling, and unforgettable. I’ll always love Superior’s shoreline, but exploring the interior heart of the park gave me a whole new respect for the land.
Thanks to my backcountry SUP partner for always being up for an advencha!
