PM Carney says Canadians gave his gov a “very clear mandate” to move ahead with major economic changes as Ottawa pushes Bill C-39, the proposed Building Canada Strong Act.

The 246-page bill would aim to streamline federal reviews of major projects, with a proposed maximum one-year timeline once a complete application and required information are in place. It would also change federal labour rules, including setting conditions for intervention in work stoppages considered to affect the “national interest.”

Supporters say the changes could help Canada build faster and attract investment, while labour organizations and other critics have raised concerns about workers’ rights and the scope of gov powers.

🇨🇦🇺🇸 The Canadian potash debate just took another turn.

U.S. President Trump initially said the U.S. was working on a deal to purchase potash from Belarus at a lower price than Canadian supplies.

But one day later, Trump said the U.S. would continue buying Canadian potash, while adding that Belarus wants to sell at a lower price.

Saskatchewan Premier Moe said the Belarus proposal was “never realistic,” pointing to Belarus’s existing supply commitments and the logistical challenges involved in getting its potash to American farmers.

Saskatchewan is the world’s largest potash producer, and the U.S. is its biggest customer.

PM Carney’s gov has introduced the Building Canada Strong Act, proposing major changes to how Canada approves infrastructure and energy projects.

The bill aims to streamline federal reviews, establish a one-year decision timeline after complete applications are submitted, and give specialized regulators a greater role in assessing certain projects.

It also proposes changes to federal labour-dispute rules, including a 21-day mediation process before certain gov interventions.

At a Conservative rally in Brantford, Ont., on September 20, PPoilievre said Canada will “never be the 28th state” of the European Union. His comments followed European Commission President Leyen’s September 16 proposal for Canada to become the EU’s first “associate member.”

The exact structure and terms of any new Canada–EU partnership have not yet been determined. PM Carney has welcomed deeper cooperation, while saying Canada is not pursuing full EU membership.
