It saddens me to say that my Sears Reflex Zoom XL Super 8 camera bit the dust this past weekend. After a year and a half, 7 rolls of stock, 350 feet of film and approximately 21 minutes of footage, we say goodbye to this filmmaking artifact of a bygone era. We were lucky enough to finish shooting a scene for an upcoming project and, fortunately, I have a couple backup options, but I will miss this little guy.

2025: Steel City Warriors is a slice-of-life anthology focusing on the inhabitants of Steel City, a wasteland cesspool in the year 2025: stoner-punk Musty Draco ventures into the unknown in pursuit of outrageous fortune and a better life; lawman Trapper Steve hunts the violent fugitive, Hatchet MacReady.

It stars Minnie Brimstone-Kingsley, Jan Wagner, David Kolenski and Michael Adam, with Michael Fausti as the narrator.

Tonight's the night! Catch the Canadian premiere of our super 8 short film, Mermaid Dreams. Mermaid Dreams was shot entirely in Hamilton, ON. The underwater sequences were filmed during a photoshoot with lead Lilith Van Horn at Studio Ethereal, on a set designed by renowned photographer Andrea Hunter. The beach sequences were shot during an outing not too long after at Van Wagner's Beach on Lake Ontario.

The music for Mermaid Dreams was written and performed by Mike Trebilcock, of Sematary Spawn and seminal '90s band The Killjoys. I asked Mike for something serene and ethereal, with musical references such as Donovan's Atlantis and the water level music from Super Mario Allstars. What Mike provided sounded to me like an Angelo Badalamenti piece for a David Lynch film, but he insists he was channeling Riz Ortolani vibes. Either way, it was dreamy and perfect and I couldn't have been happier.

Locally-based artist CakePop Studios was commissioned to design the title card for Mermaid Dreams. I wanted something unique and hand drawn to make the title card pop, but I also needed it to compliment the vintage aesthetic of the super 8 film stock. Mermaid Dreams was shot entirely on a roll of Kodak colour negative 7203 50d super 8 film stock. The stock was supplied by Niagara Custom Lab, who also processed and scanned it after we wrapped shooting.
