**CMHC Bonuses Spark Debate Over Crown Corporation Spending**

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) awarded more than **$31.7 million in bonuses** last year to executives and thousands of employees, according to government data reviewed by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF).

The figures were released following a parliamentary request for details on bonuses paid by Crown corporations. CMHC reported that **79 executives and 2,371 other employees** received performance bonuses during the fiscal year.

Executives received a combined **$3.5 million**, averaging nearly **$45,000 each**, while employees below the executive level received more than **$28 million**, averaging almost **$12,000 per person**.

CMHC said about **77.8% of eligible non-executive employees** received bonuses, while details about the percentage of executives receiving bonuses were withheld due to privacy concerns.

The disclosure has renewed debate over compensation practices at government-owned organizations, especially as Canadians continue to face concerns about housing affordability and rising costs.

**Two Men Charged in Alleged Surrey Pride Crosswalk Vandalism**

Police in Surrey say two men have been charged in connection with the alleged vandalism of a Pride crosswalk in the City Central neighbourhood.

According to Surrey Police Service, **Amrit Birring, 58, and Errol Povah, 67, each face one count of mischief over $5,000** related to an incident that allegedly occurred on May 30 during a protest.

The charges were announced on June 26. Police say the same sidewalk was allegedly damaged again the following day, leading to an additional charge against Povah.

Authorities are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with information about the incidents to contact the police non-emergency line.

Ottawa’s largest school board says it will not take part in this year’s Capital Pride Parade because the event takes place outside the regular school year.

The Capital Pride Parade, scheduled for Aug. 30, celebrates the history of LGBTQ+ rights in Canada and honours the 1971 We Demand Rally, the country’s first major LGBTQ+ rights protest.

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) said Pride recognition already takes place in schools during June, with activities focused on celebrating diversity, promoting inclusion, and creating safe environments for students and staff.

The board explained that Capital Pride events are held in late August, when students and employees are still on summer break, making participation outside the school calendar.

The OCDSB’s school year begins on Sept. 1, with a scheduled professional activity day on Aug. 31 before classes resume.

The decision has sparked discussion about the role of schools in community events and how institutions balance participation, inclusion, and scheduling.

A retired Saskatoon high school principal who removed a student’s keffiyeh-inspired scarf during a graduation ceremony has faced a wave of online backlash, including thousands of messages that allegedly include threats and personal attacks, according to her lawyer.

Lawyer Brian Pfefferle, who represents Wendy Benson, said the messages have come from around the world through emails, voicemails, and social media accounts. He described some of the communications as abusive and said his client is concerned about her personal safety.

The incident, which happened on June 23, gained widespread attention after videos circulated online and were viewed millions of times. Saskatoon police have confirmed they are investigating both the original incident and the online reactions that followed.

Pfefferle said his client’s inbox has received a constant flow of messages, with some posts sharing her personal information and encouraging others to contact her. He called coordinated harassment campaigns unacceptable and said hateful messages do not contribute to a meaningful discussion.
