A really stubborn caseback. This one really put up a fight but in the end I got it back together!

These are called sliding pinions. It connects the winding/setting stem to the gears that wind or set your watch. When you pull out the stem it slides into different positions depending on what function you want. However, when some of the teeth are missing, it doesn’t work so well. This likely happened when someone tried to force the stem to turn. So if your watch isn’t easy to set, don’t force it.
