We had to dig deep into the archives again for this one! Thatโs me (Fiona) in my early twenties at the first Canoe Symposium in Merrickville (with my dog Tundra๐ฅน).
For those who donโt know, I painted my first wilderness scene on a canoe paddle as a teen. With some encouragement from family and friends, that one piece sparked a little art venture. I tried traditional canvases but found myself more inspired by unconventional surfacesโrocks, fungi, old saw blades, and especially, wooden canoe paddles.
Through that paddle art, I met Bill Swift, who invited me to paint live in the Swift Canoe & Kayak booth at the Toronto Sportsman Show. Itโs also where I met Mike for the first time. The rest is nearly 30 years of paddling history. (Just writing that sentence gave me three new grey hairs.)
Somewhere in the middle of all that, I worked at Swift Canoe and then Wilderness Dreams and Mid-Canada Fiberglass in Temiskaming Shores, designed catalogs and built the website for Scott Canoe, and created magazine ads for Scott Canoe, Bluewater, Impex, and Pyranha kayaks. From paintbrushes to pixels, my love for paddling was always at the core of my work.
I donโt paint many wilderness scenes these days. Caring for our son Makobe, who has autism, and running a paddle-making business with Mike keeps me super busy. Thus, my time for intricate art is limited.
But thanks to all of you and your custom paddle orders, Iโve stayed creatively challenged and deeply inspired. Helping you bring your artistic visions to life gives me life too.
What started as a love for paddles has become a calling. For the past 30 years, because of your trust and support, those paddles have become my love letters - to you, and to the paddling world.
Thank you for letting me keep writing them. And thank you for digging Badger Paddles!
