A 20-car train operated by the Union Colliery Company departed from Union (now Cumberland) loaded with coal and carrying one passenger car. As the locomotive, Union Colliery No. 4, crossed the central span of the wooden Trent River Trestle, the 10-year-old beams failed under the massive weight. The central span collapsed completely, sending the locomotive, coal cars, and passenger coach plunging nearly 100 feet (30 metres) into the rocky canyon ravine below.
There have been other disasters on the island that cost more loss of life, but this was the most fatal accident involving the railway i.e. a train.
