We are looking for a new logo for Visit Iqaluit, our upcoming visitor's guide to Nunavut's capital city. We've asked our local connections to help, but no one is available. If you are or know a designer, esp. one with Northern connections or Indigenous, we encourage you to please enter the design contest at 99designs before Wednesday evening.

Spoiling the kids with chocolate fondue for dinner is our way of saying farewell to 2021 in style.

Even though we can't see friends for a while due to the current lockdown, we were lucky enough to be able to enjoy Iqaluit's New Year's Eve fireworks display from the comfort of our living room.

2021 was a roller-coaster year here at Northern Story, with our work featured in media outlets around the world, including our photos gracing the front page of The Globe and Mail three times in one month (including back-to-back covers in October)! With the construction of a giant iglu, the state of Nunavut's internet, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's visit, and a water crisis that lasted two months, Iqaluit was in the spotlight this year.

Northern Story is gearing up to tell more stories from across the North. Thanks to an internship grant from the Government of Canada through Pinnguaq, we have grown to a bona fide team (!) with David Aglukark joining as a web and app developer to help relaunch several websites, and Lubna bin Zayyad joining as a digital content producer.

We need your help showcasing the interesting people and businesses who truly make the North. If you want to nominate someone or have a great story idea, please message us!

Today, in the Globe and Mail! (Ottawa, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan editions only.) The drum dancing group Huqqullaaqattigiit from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, performs in front of a 700 sq. ft. qaggiq - a giant iglu - built by Polar Outfitting under the guidance of master builders Solomon Awa and Jacoposie Tiglik. The Qaggiq 2021 festival was hosted by Qaggiavuut, an organization intent on building a permanent venue for performing arts in Nunavut. Performing March 20 are, from left, Julia Ogina, Noah Kudlak, Malachai Angulalik, Sarah Jancke, Jerry Puglik, and Sam Anayoak.

Shattered dreams today as the 2020 Arctic Winter Games were cancelled only one week before the event. I just finished a series of profiles of Nunavut athletes and performers for , and here’s one picture from my shoot with speedskater Akutaq Williamson Bathory. Check out their link to read about her dreams and ambitions for this year’s games. She will have more chances but others I profiled won’t due to their age.
