Hold your older child close and remind them:

Young children borrow our calm before they can create their own, but what does that really mean?

In a well-known developmental study called the Still-Face Experiment, babies first interacted normally with a parent. The parent then became expressionless and unresponsive for a short period, before warmly reconnecting.

The change was striking.

In one study of 54 infants, 92.6% smiled less and 88.9% reduced their positive attempts to engage during the unresponsive period. When their parent reconnected, most of the babies began looking, smiling and reaching for connection again.

The adult hadn’t left the room. What changed was the emotional connection.

Young children continually read our faces, voices and movements for clues about whether everything is safe. Before they can settle their own nervous systems, they often need the steady presence of someone they trust.

This doesn’t mean parents must always be calm. No one is. The deeper lesson is that we can pause, soften our voice and reconnect. Repair matters more than perfection.

There’s a moment between siblings that no one else can quite see.

A quiet pull. A little curiosity. A feeling that somehow says, *you belong with me.*

Sometimes it happens before the baby even arrives. Sometimes it takes a little longer. But that connection has a way of finding them.
