September 19, 1980 — Bob & Doug McKenzie made their SCTV debut.

If you grew up in Canada in the ’80s, you heard that “Coo-roo-coo-coo…” and knew exactly what was coming.

Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas turned two beer-drinking, back-bacon-loving “hosers” into a national phenomenon with Great White North. The characters were originally created as a joke on Canadian-content rules — and somehow became bigger than anyone expected.

Take off, eh.

Happy Labour Day, Canada! The origin of in our country can be traced back to 1872, when parades and rallies were held in Toronto supporting the Toronto Typographical Union’s strike for a 58-hour work week.

The Knights of Labor were key promoters of working-class rights in the late 1800s. Known for their preference for arbitration over strikes, they recruited tens of thousands of members in Canada.
