Barry Dempster—beloved poet, longtime Brick Books acquisitions editor and editorial collective member, and deeply kind human—died today (November 27, 2025). An exquisitely generous mentor to so many of us, he was always as eager to learn as he was to teach. We were all so lucky to have him among us. His life was steeped in poetry and friendship, right to the very end.

He also loved the sensual details of life; our vote is to honour him today by cooking a sumptuous meal, or taking a walk in the snow, watching a classic black-and-white film, rubbing a dog’s belly for a while, or reading a poem out loud—anything that makes you feel awake and glad to be alive.

“Little Light” is from Invisible Dogs, published by Brick Books in 2013.

Did you miss our previous blog installments surrounding publishing ecosystems? We discuss various parts of the publishing process through each of our fall releases!

In an interview with the author, we cover what the editing process was like for In a Riptide between the author, Ronna Bloom. and the editor, Sue Sinclair. Taking a look at both Infinite Audition and The Garbage Poems, you can get a behind-the-scenes peek at what goes into different elements of a book's design. Read all three blogs to get a glimpse of just a few of the beautiful things that a book of poetry needs to come to fruition as a published piece.

What struck me the first time I read D.M. Bradford’s work is how powerfully their fragmented line – often refusing, it seems, to complete a full sentence – achieves an effect of contentious contact with “the big picture.” In Dream Of No One But Myself, terse, painfully observant poems about family dynamics blur into essays which disintegrate into scatterings of language, punctuated by colourful reassemblages of once cut-up photos from the author’s childhood.
