Author Dan Mennill, professor of biology at the University of Windsor, explores the question of how birds like the SAVANNAH SPARROW learn the songs they sing. And Wayne Grady, award-winning author of Emancipation Day and other works, uses the unlikely arrival of a BLUE GROSBEAK on Pelee Island, Ontario — well away from its normal range — to discuss why species sometimes veer from their usual habitats.

JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th at 7:00 p.m. for the launch of LIMBO MOON, a chapbook by our newest author, Windsor's Poet Laureate Peter Hrastovec. The event's being hosted by Cafe Amor & Art on Ottawa Street in Windsor. Peter will be joined by poets and friends of the press, Jovan Stefanov and Kalie Chapman.

This very special publication marks the first in our Scarlet Tanager Poetry Series. We couldn't think of a better person to inaugurate the series than Peter.

NEW SPRING BOOKS!

Last weekend, we were thrilled to launch three new chapbook essays by two of Canada's most prestigious authors and one of Mexico's most tireless champions of bird preservation.

Margaret Atwood's BIRDING WITH GRAEME GIBSON is an often hilarious and ultimately moving reflection on the pastime she shared with fellow author and avid birder, the late Graeme Gibson, her partner for over forty-eight years. Printed and hand-bound in a limited edition of only 500 copies. Moving fast!

Multiple award-winning writer Helen Humphreys' IN CONVERSATION WITH THE WILD recounts her midlife turn to the hobby of nature drawing -- and how it helped her communicate more deeply with the natural world.

Finally, environmental educator and preservationist Rodrigo Lopez writes about the beautiful but endangered ROSE-BELLIED BUNTING in his essay on the bird. Located only in a small crescent of wilderness in southern Mexico, the bunting's habitat is threatened due to industrial expansion.

The photos below were taken at the books' launch on Pelee Island last weekend, at the 23rd annual Springsong banquet on Saturday evening and Pelee Wings PIBO Bird Talk on Sunday morning. The weekend was a blast!
