Chiquinha Gonzaga (1847-1935) is one of the brightest chapters of Brazil’s music history, and one of the most relevant names in the creation of a Brazilian musical identity. Her legacy gets renewed through these arrangements, now for the guitar. These arrangements bring visibility to one of Brazil’s most important composers while creating a dialogue with the guitar repertoire that has emerged in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Octávio Deluchi is a Brazilian artist, classical guitarist, pedagogue, and arranger based in New York. He leads diverse projects and initiatives with the classical guitar, Brazilian music, and collaboration with composers at the core of his work. Internationally awarded, he has performed in venues such as the Carnegie Hall, Americas Society, Lincoln Center, and more. His latest recordings were released by Brazil’s historic label Kuarup.
“While her instrument was the piano, one could argue that the guitar would have been an even more natural voice for her expressive, richly Brazilian idiom. (…) His arrangements are faithful to her melodies, harmonically fluid in the guitar’s language, and truly worthy of her pioneering legacy.”
- Sérgio Assad
“Octávio’s carefully selected arrangements display the variety within Chiquinha Gonzaga’s output, confirming that she was at the forefront of the development of Brazilian popular music at the turn of the century.“
- João Luiz Rezende
