This event was built with heart, intention, and community at its core—and we’re so proud to finally share it with you.

And now—it’s time. Our SOLD OUT event is happening tomorrow, and we can’t wait to welcome you into this space of reflection, remembrance, and cultural pride. ✨

💃🏽 Amika Kushwaha is grace, rhythm, and story in motion. A globally recognized Canadian Kathak dancer and Harmonium virtuoso, Amika brings the centuries-old traditions of the Lucknow Gharana to life through intricate footwork, expressive storytelling, and musical brilliance.

✨ Her signature style — often described as “Poetry in Motion” — fuses elegance and stamina with mathematically complex compositions and breathtaking pirouettes. She’s also considered one of Canada’s top Harmonium accompanists.

🩸 Menstruation ≠ Impurity

Across generations in Indo-Fijian households, periods have often been met with silence, shame, and restrictions — from 🚫 not entering the mandir to 🍳 being told not to cook or even 🛏️ sleep in the same room as others.

Many of these practices are traced back to patriarchal interpretations of Hindu texts — not necessarily the spiritual heart of Hinduism. In fact, menstruation marks Shakti ✨ — divine feminine power — the life force itself.

As we unlearn stigma and reclaim our stories, we remember: our bodies are not taboo. Our blood is not dirty. Our existence is not a disruption.

Let’s talk about it. 🗣️

Happy Menstrual Health Day!

*NOTE: The exclusively Hindu lens on this post speaks to my own experience as a Hindu Indo-Fijian child of immigrants raised in the diaspora. But this is by no means complete or representative of all Indo-Fijian menstrutors' identities and experience. There are many other religious lenses and cultural values that influence how menstruation is viewed amongst Indo-Fijians at home and in the diaspora.

▶️ Tell us about something we've missed in the comments below or if you're willing to, share your own experience of menstruation as an Indo-Fijian 👇🏾
