What started as an off-road trip to Radium Hot Springs turned into a completely unexpected BC adventure — escaping wildfire smoke, discovering Mystery Creek Road, camping at Lake Chehalis, and somehow ending up at a haunted hotel and ghost town.

We originally headed west with plans to explore the backroads around Radium, BC, but heavy wildfire smoke and nearby fires quickly changed those plans. Instead of turning around, we kept driving west until we finally reached clearer skies — turning what should have been a simple travel day into a 13-hour push across British Columbia.

Eventually, we made it to one of our favourite little places, where we spent a much-needed day swimming, relaxing and recovering beside the river.

Then it was time to explore.

With only one day to see where the backroads would take us, we came across a road with a name we couldn't possibly ignore: Mystery Creek Road.

So naturally… we had to solve the mystery.

We followed the trail through the BC backcountry until it eventually brought us to the incredible shores of Lake Chehalis. After a beautiful night camping beside the lake and taking in the mountain views, another unexpected twist changed our plans again — we got the call to head back to Alberta for work.

Rather than make the entire drive home in one shot, we decided to break the trip into two days. With wildfire activity still affecting the region and safety being our priority, we booked a last-minute room somewhere we'd driven past countless times and always wanted to explore:

Three Valley Lake Chateau.

And that's where things got weird.

We check into the historic Three Valley Lake Chateau, tour our room and the property, and then head into the Three Valley Gap Ghost Town to explore the preserved buildings, old west history and eerie atmosphere of one of British Columbia's most unusual roadside destinations.

This adventure was absolutely nothing like the trip we originally planned — and somehow, that made it even better.

From wildfire detours and long highway days to remote BC backroads, Lake Chehalis camping, Mystery Creek Road, a historic hotel and a ghost town… sometimes the best adventures begin when the original plan completely falls apart.

There’s a big difference between something that looks good in a build… and something that actually makes life on the road better.

Alan, owner of Fahrt Systems, absolutely nailed both.

We had Alan build a completely custom seat-delete and kitchen drawer system for my Jeep, designed around the way we actually travel, camp and live full-time on the road. The end result is clean, incredibly functional and built like it belongs there.

From the beginning, Alan was phenomenal to work with. Professional, thorough and incredibly easy to communicate with throughout the entire process. Every detail was thought through, the materials and hardware are top quality, and the attention to detail is seriously impressive.

And one of my favourite parts?

It’s QUIET. 😂

Anyone who spends enough time driving washboard and backroads knows how quickly a poorly built storage system can turn into a rolling percussion section. This thing doesn’t rattle, bang or shake around behind me.

The seat-delete gives me a huge amount of organized storage while keeping everything accessible, and the rear kitchen system means we can pull into camp, slide the kitchen out and get cooking without unloading half the Jeep first.

For us, builds like this aren’t about stuffing as much gear into a vehicle as possible. They’re about creating a system that makes living out here simpler.

Everything has a place.
Everything is easy to access.
And the Jeep works better for the life we’re actually living.

We genuinely couldn’t say enough good things about Alan and the craftsmanship behind Fahrt Systems. Supporting talented people who care this much about what they build is pretty damn easy.

There’s something strangely peaceful about a dark storm rolling in.

The sky gets heavy.
The wind picks up.
The world around you gets louder… and somehow everything inside you gets quieter.

Not every beautiful moment has to come with sunshine.

Sometimes peace is sitting still beneath a black sky, listening to the thunder roll across the distance, feeling the temperature drop, and watching nature remind you just how small you are.

We don’t always run from the storm.

Sometimes we sit back, take it all in, and let it pass around us. ⛈️🖤

Because there’s beauty in the wild days too.

Sometimes the best places aren’t the ones on the itinerary.

They’re the ones you find because a road caught your attention and you decided to see where it went.

We turned down an unfamiliar road with no real expectations — just curiosity, two Jeeps, and enough time to keep going.

And somehow, it led us here.

Mountains disappearing into the distance. Cold mountain water rolling onto the shore. The Jeeps parked beneath the trees. Two chairs facing the view and absolutely nowhere else we needed to be.

This is the part of this life we never want to lose.

Not just the trails.
Not just the builds.
Not just getting somewhere difficult to reach.

The freedom to wonder what’s down that road… and go find out.

Some places are better discovered by accident. 🧡

We joined the Four Wheel Freedom crew for a weekend of camping and Jeep off-roading deep in the British Columbia backcountry — taking on steep climbs, rocky sections, narrow mountain trails and snow that clearly hadn’t gotten the memo that it was summer. 😂

But the real story wasn’t just the trail.

It was the convoy, the teamwork, the laughs and being surrounded by an incredible group of people who will stop without hesitation to help one another through whatever lies ahead.

This is exactly what the off-road community is all about. 🤙
