Chapter 8: The Great Forgetting

Water was never meant to be separated from the living systems that created it… yet today, around one million plastic bottles are purchased every single minute around the world. Most are used once… and then they remain on this earth for centuries to come
Every minute, the equivalent of 1-2 garbage trucks full of plastic enters the world’s ocean… pause for a moment and allow that to sink in…

Hour after hour
Day after day
Year after year
All entering the same waters that regulate our climate, sustain marine life, produce much of the oxygen we breathe, and support the living systems of this planet
In an attempt to package and sell the very element that sustains life, we have created one of the largest sources of pollution facing the waters of our world
The bottle does not disappear when it leaves our hands… it continues to break apart into smaller and smaller particles of plastic that enters our rivers, lakes, coastlines, oceans, wildlife, and eventually the greater water cycle itself…. Reminding us that we do to the waters, always finds its way back to ourselves
This chapter has never been about fear… but more about remembrance. Water was never meant to become a disposable product… it was meant to remain part of a living relationship between the earth and all life it sustains
The more we remember that relationship, the more likely we are to protect it
