Three building were demolished within a few days of each other in Langley City earlier this month.

Two of the sites – one the former location of a combined car wash and oil change business, and the other an ageing social housing building – were torn down to make way for new residential projects, while the owner of the third site, a one-storey building used to house several businesses, was expected to file a development permit application later this year.

At the former Washworld and Jiffy L**e location in the 20100 block of Fraser Hwy., developer Whitetail Homes is planning to build a new six-storey mixed-use apartment building, with construction expected to begin later this year. That’s according to information provided by the City in response to an Langley Advance Times query.

Teri James, executive director of the Downtown Langley Business Association (DLBA), said about 35,000 people attended the festival throughout the day.

“Arts Alive was the biggest and best it’s ever been this year, and the feedback has been extremely positive,” she said.

It was Aldergrove resident Sheryl Stevenson’s first time showcasing her artwork at the annual Arts Alive Festival.

The Aldergrove Business Association (ABA) contest is for kids up to age 16, and the winners will be determined by public voting based on taste testing.

A Township of Langley fire crew has joined the battle in Kelowna.

Mayor Eric Woodward said at 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug 20, a Township of Langley fire crew of four and a Type 1 engine with a 1,000 gallon tank left for Kelowna “to help and serve where needed.”

“Whatever we can do to assist,” added Woodward, who credited the new fire chief, Jason de Roy with the idea.

On the fourth day of a continued air quality advisory in the Lower Mainland there’s some relief in the air.

Air quality readings improved overnight across the region, even in the Eastern Fraser Valley where smoke concentrations were forecast to be ‘moderate’ Tuesday (Aug. 22), as opposed to ‘very high’ risk, as they have been for several days since smoke and fine particulates from B.C. wildfires moved in.

The air quality advisory is over however for Metro Vancouver’s southwest, said the update from Environment Canada. It was first announced on Aug. 19 and was to remain in effect until further notice.

Charcuterie on the Pier, presented by Sheila's Catering Co., is a fundraising event for Sources Community Resources, Friends of the Pier, and the Semiahmoo Rotary Club featuring a historic attempt to break the World Record of the Longest Charcuterie Board.
