Sustainability…

Holding talks to ensure sustainable cocoa farming practices in Central Africa.

On the morning of July 23, 2025, I walked into the conference room in Douala with my recorder and notepad, ready to witness the kickoff of a three-day scientific seminar, one that promised to spark critical conversations around cocoa farming and conservation. The room was alive with the presence of researchers, university scholars, conservationists, and development experts from across Central Africa.

This wasn’t just another technical meeting. The seminar was part of the CAPRO_TNS project, a flagship research initiative aligning cocoa farming with biodiversity protection across the Tri-National Sangha region, a shared ecological treasure of Cameroon, Congo, and the Central African Republic. I was there to report, but also to learn.

Professor Roger Ngoufo, who coordinates scientific work for the TNS Scientific Committee, wasted no time in laying out the stakes, pointing out the tough balance between environmental preservation and rural livelihoods. His words resonated in a region where thousands depend on cocoa for survival, yet the same crop threatens to chip away at protected forests.

As I listened to presentations, it became clear that this project, under the RESSAC program funded by the European Union, was about more than research — it was about action. Dr. Frankline Nghobuoche of CIFOR-ICRAF reminded participants that the goal was not just data validation, but guiding scientists to publish findings that influence international policy.

What struck me most was the sense of urgency. Dr. Théophile Zognou, Executive Director of the Tri-National Trust Fund, didn’t mince words: ““If we don't limit deforestation and transform our cocoa locally, we risk not being able to export it.” His warning echoed louder than the room’s air-conditioning.

Over the course of the day, I heard how field teams had gathered vast data. The goal? Understand how cocoa is expanding, and how to make its growth sustainable.

In between sessions, I exchanged thoughts with Dr. Armando Kanou, a postdoc researcher, who explained how socio-economic, biophysical, and remote sensing data would guide practical recommendations.

As I filed out of the room, one thought lingered: this seminar may be technical, but its impact, if translated into action, could shape the future of cocoa farming in Africa. And I was there to capture the first chapter.

As we begin a new week, I share with you one of the outings of Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group.

"First, don't argonize, organise.

It might be easy to feel paralysed by the scale hopelessness of many of our challenges today. But don't be.

Make hope the most powerful asset. Hope is the courage to build where others are tearing down.

Hold on to your moral compass and it's never easy to challenge power. We don't serve power. We serve people.

Invest time in what truly will sustain. You your friends, your families, your mentors, and your partners.

Protect those bonds because in the toughest moments of your lives, those relationships will remind you of Who you are, Why you started and Why you must be going..."

Take it from your own view, but it all translates PURPOSE. That thing that keep you going even when everything seems lost.

Happy New Week fam!.

Cybersecurity, at the heart of discussions in recent times.

Did you know that according to statistics, the Global number of unique threats reported by end users in 2023 stood at 1.9 million.

Well, 2023 to 2025, you can imagine the threat at this stage.

Africa as a whole, and Cameroon in particular, being a major country in the CEMAC Zone, is multiplying efforts to build up a solid cyber space and economic system.

To this effect, Douala, is today, 14th of July, playing host to the 2nd edition of the Africa Cyber Trust, an initiative that seeks to school individuals amongst which, students, young men and women in all spheres of lives including tech and business.

Jointly organized by the One Africa Forum and Data Portect, all organs that advocate for a strong cyber security system in an ever-growing economy.

Answering present at this second edition are entrepreneurs, CEOs, board chairs, including Dr. Fritz Ntonne Ntonne, the Board Chair of the Airports of Cameroon.

Essentially, it is in a bid to tackle the concerns which have been making waves in the internet space, as regards cybercrimes.

Placed under the theme, "Towards a Resilient Framework for all sectors" it also seeks to fortify the foundations placed by predecessors on putting out a strong cyber security system in the country and building a nation of cyber competences, as strategies on how to do so are also part of the discussions, with keynote speakers.

October 12 is at the corner. As the country gets set for the crucial period, many Cameroonians pay no attention to that.

In the sense that, to them, they have nothing to do with politics!. Or better still, as it is always commonly said, "we already know the winner"

Well, just a little reminder, politics determines our society. It governs the other sectors of life, from environmental to cultural to humanitarian and of course, business -economy, amongst others...

The debate is over!.!.!

If at all you were still wondering. Stop!.

President Paul Biya has cleared the air. He has officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming October 2025 Presidential Elections

In a public declaration, the 92-year-old leader emphasizes his unwavering commitment to ensuring the security and well-being of Cameroonians, citing visible and commendable progress under his leadership.

Acknowledging growing national and global challenges, Biya said that he could not abandon his "mission" and has decided to respond to "numerous and insistent calls" from across Cameroon’s ten regions and the diaspora.

"The well-being of our youth and women will be at the heart of my priorities," he affirms in his public communiqué, pledging continued service with renewed determination.

But many are asking : What about the men???

Well, worth recalling, President Paul Biya has been in power since 1982 and is Africa's second-longest-serving leader, after that of Equatorial Guinea, President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who came to be at the helm of his nation in an August 3, 1979, coup.

His announcement puts to rest months of speculation about whether he would seek another term.

Well, it's official.

A new chapter, a renewed mandate: Maureen Ndi re-elected as CAMASEJ-D President

Fam, alot has been happening lately, but about this, I can't stay without saying it out.

Well, this is what happened.

On Sunday, July 6th, something powerful happened within the community of English-speaking journalists in Douala. With unity, vision, and a deep sense of purpose, members of the Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists – Douala Chapter (CAMASEJ-D) came together to re-elect journalist of Canal 2 International, Maureen Ndi, as their president.

With 30 out of 41 eligible members casting their votes, the process was conducted under the watchful eyes of national and regional officials, including Egbe Frida Nken (Vice National President) and Ambe MacMillan Awa (National Auditor), who both praised the fairness and transparency of the election. Veteran journalist Philip Soteh and legal advisor Barrister Eben Emmanuel Nzo Nguty added further credibility to the proceedings by montoring every step of the elections, thereby emphasizing the importance of ethics and professionalism in the excercise of the profession.

Newly re-elected president, Maureen Ndi, speaking after her re-election, confessed: “It’s not going to be an easy ride. I know the challenges are there. But we believe we can do more to empower our members, to add value to their work, and to focus on continuous capacity building.”

And perhaps the most heartfelt part of her speech? Her commitment to grooming the younger ones. The new generation of journalists. “They need us,” she said simply, but powerfully.

Alongside Maureen Ndi, the newly elected CAMASEJ-D executive team includes:

Smart Njikang Gabriel (Mr.Ambassador)– Vice President

Bibiana Manca – Secretary General

Juliette Messame – Assistant Secretary General

Emmanuella Nyoki – Treasurer

Amboh Gladys – Financial Secretary

Fon Rene Marquez – Public Relations Officer(PRO)

Oni Ladonette – Assistant PRO

Vanessa Chuyong – Social Secretary 1

Abumbi Charles – Social Secretary 2

This new team has been given a new mandate. A mandate to do more. To lead boldly. To mentor. To raise ethical standards. To amplify the voice of journalists in a fast-changing media landscape, specifically in the Littoral Region.

Congratulations to Madam President Maureen Ndi and her entire team. The next four years are a blank canvas and the pens are in your hands. 🖊️

In the meantime, we get set for the October 2025 presidential elections.

Ahhh! Farming,

I recently traded the city buzz for birdsong, sweat, soil, and sunshine. And guess what, I loved every second of it.

Stepping into the farm felt like pressing pause on everything else, which I eventually did since I have been off social media. No phones buzzing, no honking cars. Just nature in its raw, beautiful form.

This is partly due to Njonguo Sindy Nguegim passion. Following up her story sparked the zeal to go farming again.

For a long while as a result of the crisis, I had forgotten how pleasant farming was, is and will certainly continue to be, as it goes way beyond just planting seeds in the ground; it's about reconnecting with the earth, with ourselves.

As I held the machete, I was reminded of the importance of farming, not only as the backbone of our food systems, but as a grounding force in our lives.

Every crop, every harvest, is a product of patience, care, and time. And in a world where everything is so fast, farming teaches us to slow down and trust the process.

But beyond the food it provides, that stuff is therapy:

The fresh air, the physical activity, the connection to nature, it's healing. There’s something deeply relieving about digging into the soil with your hands, watching plants grow, and realizing you’re part of something bigger and more natural. It's exercise, meditation, and purpose, all in one.

I left tired, but in the best way possible. My body felt alive, my mind felt clearer, and my heart felt full. Whether you’re a full-time farmer or just curious to try, I honestly recommend taking a break from the noise and getting your hands a little dirty. My God, that stuff is so so cool!!!

Indeed, agriculture feeds the world, but it also feeds the soul, do you agree ?
