Fishing, a culture that feed the coastal. A business venture on its own!.

Continuation from the previous post.

The Fishing activity in Kribi, is unfortunately at risk, with the gradual scarcity of fish, depending on the seasons. The inhabitants told us.

Each season comes with different types of fish, with varying quantities.

Far from the conventional farming practices, the people here are more into Fishing, hence, their principal source of income.

Both the young and old embrace Fishing as a livelihood, before eventually taking off to different life careers.

On that day, at the Londji seashore area in Kribi, our guide, a fisher man, who had an opportunity to secure a better job as a diver in a company on ground, explained coastal erosion too is affecting them.

Relocating to a different area further from the seashore for shelter is but just one of the many problems caused by the phenomenon, which is principally caused by human and natural factors.

Human factors; the different methods used to fish, sand mining, etc
Natural factors; sea level rise, waves and ocean currents, etc

Meantime, in a bid to curb the issue, the states as well as NGOs are multiplying efforts beginning with the sensitisation of the population and the putting in place of environmental projects that will serve as a palliative, especially to the natural factors...

_____

Meanwhile, do you know you can travel to Kribi, precisely to Londji, and get dry "mbounga" in bulk and resell in your neighborhood?. (Think about this, just gave you a business idea).

Guess what, I seized the opportunity to order some for 2000frs, and I was literally shocked seeing the quantity.

In Douala, 3 "mbounga" cost 500frs or so, in some areas... and getting the one for 2k there, and did the maths... buying in bulk there, and reselling in Douala, would be a reliable business activity...

Here we go again fam!.

Third part of our discovery...
As highlighted in our previous post about the Kribi coastal area, with a number of casualties which have been the talk of the day : the passing of individuals, those who come visiting and decide to go into the waters.

Inhabitants we approached explained, these ones drown in the waters because they do not understand the waters, when is it favorable to swim and when it is not.

We further went studying the touristic sites Kribi boasts of, specifically Ngoye and Londji. Sites, which are unfortunately at the center of the big problem, Coastal Erosion.

During the raining season, it becomes even tougher for the inhabitants around the beach.

Most of them say that over the years, they were compelled to relocated further from the beach due to the rise in the water level.

For their fish business, because most of them depend on fishing to feed, is at risk...

Continuation from last post...

As I highlighted in my previous post, that we later met with officials at MINEPDED, who helped contextualise Kribi’s situation within Cameroon’s broader climate and environmental challenges.

Their insights highlighted how coastal erosion is not an isolated phenomenon but part of a larger climate vulnerability pattern affecting the country.

First and foremost, MINEPDED, stands for the Ministry of the Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development, responsible for formulating and implementing the government's environmental policy, focusing on sustainable development.

The ministry oversees sustainable natural resource management, develops environmental protection plans, and coordinates international cooperation on environmental issues.

Reason why the team stopped by the Divisional Delegate of the said Ministry in Kribi, found in the Ocean Division.

Mr. Haman Benjamin explained to us the different types of beaches the problems plaguing them, so far as coastal erosion is concerned, amongst which is the extraction of sand from the waters.

Problems that cause the scarcity of fish in the waters to an extent that, they sometimes have to travel all the way from Kribi to Youpwe in Douala, to buy fish in bulk travel back to resell...(well thats a story for another).

Prior to this, we met with the Officials from the ANAFOR, Cameroon's National Forestry Development Agency, who also explained that deforestation in Kribi also plays a role in that, but the fear is, Cameroon lacks specialized expertise in the Forestry domain. They are few, as per the sayings of the expert.

Now the scarcity fish, you might be wondering how Kribi, a coastal town is gradually witnessing fish scarcity, well before we stress on that, do you mind we talk about the human casualties as a result of the coastal erosion?.

Students and families died in an unfortunate incident... so sad!.

Been while, fam!. But bringing exciting news!!!🙂

I applied, and got selected!. What a way to start the month!.
My field experience during a press mission. A step forward into environmental journalism.
My Goodness.

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to take part in a field workshop in Kribi as part of the second press mission organised under the Afri’Kibaaru project, by CFI Media, a French public agency that supports the world's media, coordinated by ADISI Cameroun, best known as a research and information fact-checking organ.

For a journalist covering diverse stories including environmental and community-impact stories, this assignment felt both urgent and deeply revealing.

Kribi, Cameroon’s postcard-perfect coastal town, is today one of the country’s most fragile locations, grappling with an erosion crisis that is steadily reshaping its shores and threatening livelihoods.

A packed learning mission.

Our programme was tightly structured to give us a 360-degree understanding of coastal erosion, its drivers, and its human consequences.

Our first stop was ANAFOR, where we discussed the role of forest management and ecosystem protection in mitigating environmental degradation. This set the tone for what became a deeply immersive two days: science, policy, field observation, and dialogue intersecting at every step.

We later met with officials at MINEPDED, who helped contextualise Kribi’s situation within Cameroon’s broader climate and environmental challenges. Their insights highlighted how coastal erosion is not an isolated phenomenon but part of a larger climate vulnerability pattern affecting the country.

Then, came the most exciting, yet challenging part, the field!!!.

ELECTIONS!.

The 2025 presidential elections have come, passed, and gone, but the scars remain. Solutions still pending.

I found myself reporting on politics more often during this period, from one place to another.

This simply developed in me a view of governance from a different perspective, confirming that Politics govern all spheres of the society. Proof being the short lockdown period that we observed in major cities.

The whole economy was stranded, prices witnessed unprecedented hikes, frustration literally grew, especially for the vulnerable groups, who managed life with their petit business ventures.

The happenings during that period posed a big threat to peace consolidation and building. Today, the peace is still dangling as it remains but a wish. A concept we all yearn for.

On my side, reporting on the elections, I received calls and pieces of advice, telling me to be careful as I go about reporting political matters. Thank you all for your kind words.

Meantime, in the midst of all these, I took a step aside to eventually understand the concept of conflict, peace, violence etc, as we observed tensions that escalated within few days, unfortunately leading to the death of some, and many securing injuries and health issues from the tear gas.

So, I went reading the book "Something More Than Justice: The path to lasting peace" by veteran journalist K*m Leonard Official

Personally, I love reading!. And this book, is one of its kind. A must read. From the roots of conflict to its resolution and peace consolidation, equally explaining the Anglophone Crisis and its impacts, amongst others...

Peace is what we need most in our homes, families, communities, and country, and we are all called upon to give in to peace advocacy, and it all starts by being at peace with our innerman.

Most importantly, those at the helm should equally be intentional about consolidating the so much cherished peace that we want for our society. We all need to play our part.

Thank you Mr. Leo, for such a masterpiece!.

The status quo in major neighborhoods in Douala this morning.

Has the general Monday ghost town observed in the crisis hit regions, also knocked Douala by KO?

Less than three hours to go for the "final verdict" of the 2025 presidential election, Douala the economic hub of the country, Cameroon, is as though a ghost town was declared.

In major streets, movement is not seen, as compared to the usual days.

Inhabitants have decided to stay indoors. Below is a street in the Bonamoussadi neighborhood in Douala 5 subdivision.

Has Douala now become like Bamenda or Buea on a Monday?.

The results are expected at 11AM!!!

Rather unfortunate!.

Sunday 26th of October has been a bloody day, Issa Tchiroma Bakary's supporters stormed the streets, in response to his call for a peaceful march, he earlier announced.

It unfortunately turned sour, leaving behind, as at now, no less than 4 deaths, as per reports.

Major neighborhoods in the city of Douala saw an unprecedented level of violence leaving behind casualties and numerous injured persons.

On our part, we received footages of a group of youths carrying the lifeless body of another one, reportedly killed during the protest.

In another footage, angry protesters where beating up a police officer after laying their hands on him.

When I watch such footages, Bamenda and Buea just flash through my mind...

But the question is:

Why the real bullets in such a situation?.

And the night seems to be a long one!.
