Ponoka Council will consider options for future safety upgrades at the intersection of Highways 53 and 2A this coming fall.

Ponoka administration has been engaged with Alberta Transportation over the past several months to investigate the implementation of dedicated turning signals at the intersection for both east-west and north-south turning movements. This work sought to examine possible solutions for the intersection in terms of increasing traffic safety, specifically for left turns.

"Collision data showed that the intersection experiences a higher collision rate than some other similar facilities across the province, with nearly half of reported collisions involving left-turning vehicles crossing opposing traffic," reads a report filed by Tim Schmidt, Director of Planning and Infrastructure. "The analysis concluded that many of these conflicts are associated with the absence of dedicated turning lanes and protected turning movements."

The first option would cost approximately $100,000 and modernize the existing traffic signal system by replacing aging equipment, introducing vehicle detection technology, and implementing protected left-turn signal phases on all approaches.

The second option, which is estimated to cost $260,000, would build on the signal upgrades by re-configuring the existing lane layout to provide dedicated left-turn lanes on each approach while maintaining shared through and right-turn lanes. The final option would involve intersection widening and the addition of dedicated left-turn lanes, while maintaining two through lanes in each direction was also assessed.

Meridian Beach is slated to begin a major expansion project in the coming months.

This will come as part of the Meridian Beach North Subdivision, which will see the construction of a new, slightly larger canal, as well as more than 80 new lots. The design includes 47 lots on each side of Canal Street and another 36 lots west of Canal Street. Two parking areas are included in the plan, one west of the beach and one south of the canal for boats and canal access.

The majority of the project is slated to get underway next year; however, Ponoka County CAO Peter Hall confirms that the work on constructing the new canal is expected to begin this coming winter.

"I believe that the canal development will start this winter on frozen ground, which is the best time to dig a canal from their experience," said Hall. "That portion will happen then, and then over the next number of years, the subdivision with the new 80-plus lots will be developed in stages."

The Meridian Beach development was originally modeled after Ontario's Muskoka region to bring a traditional cottage-country ambiance to central Alberta. Back in February, roughly 21.4 acres of land were rezoned from agricultural district to lake resort district to accommodate future subdivision of the property. Hall says that the area continues to serve as an economic driver for the region.

Lacombe-Ponoka MLA Jennifer Johnson is in Minnesota this week to promote Alberta's economic interests.

This comes as part of this year's Council of State Governments Midwest's annual Midwestern Legislative Conference. The forum serves as a nonpartisan, binational association of legislators from eleven Midwestern U.S. states and Canadian provinces to foster regional cooperation, share policy ideas, and improve state and provincial government operations.

"Alberta is a reliable partner, a global energy leader and a key contributor to North American economic security," said Jennifer Johnson, MLA for Lacombe-Ponoka. "We will highlight how Alberta's resources, innovation, and expertise can help drive growth and strengthen supply chains."

From today until Wednesday, Sept. 2, MLA Johnson says she will meet with U.S. legislators, government officials, and industry leaders to strengthen relationships, advocate for Alberta's interests, and advance shared priorities in trade, energy, agriculture, and economic growth.

The Town of Ponoka continues to explore plans to reduce the residential speed limit to 40 km/h.

This would affect all local roads within the municipality aside from school and playground zones. The idea for the change was first brought forward last October by Councillor Teri Underhill in an effort to boost pedestrian and traffic safety. Since that time, Ponoka staff have developed an implementation strategy to move the plans ahead.

"The objective is to create a consistent and easily understood speed environment that improves safety for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and other roadway users while supporting the long-term vision established through the Transportation Master Plan," reads a report filed by Ponoka's Director of Planning and Infrastructure Tim Schmidt.

The proposed change would establish 40 km/h as the default speed limit throughout municipal roadways within the Town of Ponoka, while major roadways, provincial highways, and other locations where a different speed limit is appropriate would continue to be signed accordingly. In order to move ahead with the changes, Ponoka will need to first update its traffic bylaw.
