RCMP have charged a 49-year-old with multiple offences after an investigation into a fatal vehicle collision south of Bentley.

The crash occurred shortly before 7:00 p.m. on May 16, 2026, at the intersection of Asplund Road and Highway 20. Officers with the Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment responded to the scene and discovered that a Jeep Grand Cherokee had collided with a Chevrolet Silverado.

With the assistance of Sylvan Lake Fire Department, the driver and sole occupant of the Chevrolet was extricated from the vehicle. Due to the injuries sustained, the driver, a 65-year-old Red Deer resident, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Through their investigation, police determined the westbound Jeep Grand Cherokee had collided with the southbound Chevrolet. Alcohol and speed were noted as contributing factors to the collision.

The 49-year-old driver of the Jeep, Zainul Puzhakkal of Calgary, was charged with the following offences:

- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death
- Operation of a Motor Vehicle while impaired with a blood alcohol level at or over 80 mg % causing death

A "High Streamflow Advisory" is currently in effect for the Battle River.

This advisory was put into place on June 22, 2026, by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. This indicates that water levels in the Battle River and its tributaries have risen due to recent heavy rainfall. In a statement, the Town of Ponoka asks residents to be cautious when accessing the area.

"The Town of Ponoka would like to remind residents to stay on the walking paths and keep away from the riverbanks when enjoying the Battle River Valley," reads a statement from Ponoka administration. "No river-related flooding is expected at this time."

According to the Alberta government, while property damage or widespread flooding does not typically occur during these events, minor pooling in low-lying areas and faster water flows are common.

The Ponoka Stampede Association says over 450 local students participated in this year's art contest.

This marked more than double the number of participants from 2024, as students from across the region competed to win a day pass to the Ponoka Stampede West Coast Amusements Midway. Art submissions came from St. Augustine Catholic School, Ponoka Elementary School, Bashaw School, Crestomere School, New Humble Community School, and the Mamawi Atosketan Native School.

"The theme of 'Year of the Cowgirl' was exceptionally represented among the artwork and it was clear that students have a level of creativity that’s inspiring and great to see," said the association in a release. "The talent of area students is such that the judging committee had their work cut out for them. Judging took some time because of the volume and quality of work submitted."
