A new HD GlideScope for the Leduc Hospital has been purchased by the local health foundation.

A GlideScope is a brand of video laryngoscope used by medical professionals to see inside a patient's airway and insert a breathing tube. According to the Leduc Community Hospital Foundation, this new equipment adds high-resolution visualization that supports safer intubation, especially for patients with complex anatomy.

"It's very impactful, not just for patients, but for the continuum of care," said Vanessa Sauvé, Registered Nurse and OR Manager at the Leduc Community Hospital. "It allows us to support our paramedics, students, paramedics looking to recertify, STARS paramedics, so they're able to provide really safe, good care for the patients receiving surgery."

According to the Leduc Community Hospital Foundation, with this third unit now available, teams can move faster between cases, reduce wait times across all three operating rooms, and cut down sterilization delays thanks to disposable blades.

Electricity distribution system upgrades are set to take place in the Town of Devon.

These upgrades will be completed by FortisAlberta to support third-party telecommunications infrastructure. This work will occur from September through December and include pole replacements, underground cable modifications, and related system upgrades.

The project aims to improve reliability through the replacement of aging electrical equipment to reduce maintenance and wildlife-related outages. It also seeks to increase clearance between power lines, roadways, or back alleys, and to establish new infrastructure that supports future residential, agricultural, commercial, and industrial growth in the Town of Devon.

"In certain areas, you may see workers clearing debris from poles scheduled for replacement," reads a statement from FortisAlberta. "This work is part of our ongoing commitment to delivering safe and reliable electricity while supporting the evolving needs of the communities we serve."

The new arena floor at Thorsby's Arctic Spas Rec Complex is expected to be completed on schedule.

The major project officially got underway in late March after the township identified concerns relating to a worsening brine leak in the more than 40-year-old arena floor. Several leaks had been treated in years past using sealant; however, a full replacement was decided on after a technical review determined that the sealant was no longer holding.

Demolition of the former arena floor took place in April, which included the removal of all of the concrete, boards, and piping, and the installation of the new floor began in mid-May. This involved the installation of the new piping and base work followed by the pouring of the new concrete during the summer. Thorsby Mayor Darryl Hostyn says that after the cement fully cures, the final step will be putting the ice in.

"We've got to thank our partner, Leduc County, for doing their share," said Hostyn. "It's going to be more efficient, less wear and tear in the plant, probably less on our power and electrical bills, so it's going to be great. We've always had a good quality but I think it should be even better now."

Leduc County has received federal grant funding to boost local food processing.

The grant of $94,103 from Agriculture and Agrifood Canada will allow the county to establish a new food processing space within the Business Entrepreneur Centre. This aims to support processors transitioning from small individual spaces who are unable to rent adequate spaces in the current market.

"The grant allows for a small-scale commercial kitchen-oriented space," reads a report filed by Rob MacMullen, Manager of Economic Development. "This space will allow smaller producers to access a place to help them grow their business and potential pilot a space that helps them identify their future needs without significant capital outlay that they may not be able to afford."

Included in the new processing space will be an indigenous food forest, REVI Grow System, a cooler and freezer, and a dehydrator and freeze dryer. MacMullen says there is additional work to be completed on the space, which will house these units within the Business Entrepreneur Centre, as administration may apply for additional funding via available grant programs.

"Just a great news story," said Tanni Doblanko, Mayor of Leduc County. "I remember ten or twelve years ago when the county decided it wanted to work with local food producers, when we wanted to look at small agriculture, I wouldn't have dreamed that we would be able to look at something like this, where we're actually buying equipment to help people work on their food projects."

The City of Beaumont's water feedline project on 50 Ave continues to face delays.

Work was originally expected to be wrapped up in front of Bellevue School and the Community Centre by the start of September, however, adverse weather from this past summer has pushed back the project's timeline. Lisa Vanderkwaak, Mayor of Beaumont, says that part of the delays is also attributed to the discovery of several old pipes that were not included in underground schematics.

"Most of what's slowing work down is what crews are finding underground," said Vanderkwaak in a video posted to social media. "This is one of the oldest parts of town, and it's full of utility lines. A lot of them went in decades ago, long before today's standards for mapping and recording underground infrastructure."

With students returning for the 2026-2027 school year this week, residents and nearby businesses will notice more congestion in the area as school resumes and traffic is limited to one lane on 50 Ave. Residents are encouraged to seek alternate routes until this work is completed, pending any additional unforeseen circumstances and delays.
