This Curiosity Box has been here since Dec, & it is one of the two that had never been hit (emptied, left open, or delibrately damaged).

Since we have been speaking out & standing with surv!vors, it has seen acts of v!olence three times.

I don't think that's a coincidence.

💔 The first time, someone threw a handmade, handpainted ceramic mug against the sidewalk, sending shards everywhere.

💔 The second time, someone threw a handful of handmade buttons across the ground, took the guestbook, the pen, & left the door open.

💔 The third time, someone emptied everything onto the ground & left the door open.

(Thank you to the person who sent us photos & picked up all the pins to put back into the box)

BUT LET US BE ABUNDANTLY CLEAR:

Destroying handmade art & targeting our whimsical projects WILL NOT SILENCE US.

If you respond to us standing with surv!vors by bringing destruction & v!olence, that speaks volumes about what you stand for.

We see you.

Yes, speaking up is scary & hard. Terrifyingly so. It sucks that people's art is being d!srespected by some angry individual(s) because of our ad/ocacy. But it only strengthens our resolve.

And maybe this helps ONE PERSON gain the courage to find their voice.

The ceramic sat on the sidewalk for so long it was warm in my hands when I carried it home. It felt like a hug. We glued it back together. Some pieces are still missing. That feels symbolic, too.

You can try to destroy what is kind, what is beautiful, what is whimsical.

But I am no longer afraid.

Taking your anger out on the commun!ty reminds me that speaking out is important. Thank you for the reminder.

We will always stand with surv!vors & against those who h/rm people, even if those people are prominent figures in the Lethbridge media art industry.

If you have a problem with that, come at us, not the art created by others, for others.

If you are trying to shut us up, it backfired.

It is not enough to plant flowers & hope all the bad things will get better on their own.

I am sickened to think that our silence inadvertently empowered tox!c behaviour to grow within our industry.

In 2024, we were board members of the Lethbridge Independent Film Society. This was the year Andy Davies became President of LIFS.

During that time, the board knowingly aligned with several individuals in the film c*mmun!ty who have directly h*rmed us (& others).

We resigned when it became clear the board was not willing to listen, let alone address the concerns we had regarding ongoing uneth!cal behaviour within the Society.

We did not speak out further, as we were very new to the media art world.

We were ostras!zed anyway. The ones who h*rmed us weren't.

Yesterday, we were devastated to learn that the uneth!cal behaviour we witnessed pales in comparison to the rot that was festering beneath the surface.

The recent charges filed against the previous LIFS president & public artist are horr!fic. He held positions of power & trust within our commun!ties.

The fact that this was apparently an "open secret" within Lethbridge is beyond words.

Our hearts ache for the child involved,
for all those who have been impacted by this individual & for those who is now reliving a similar nightmare.

And we are absolutely livid for those that went unheard until now.

It is terrifying to speak up.

But those of us who can, have to be brave & hold people accountable.

We owe it to ourselves & to each other.

It should never fall on a child to protect the city.
