Canadians who bought grocery store beef over the last decade are now eligible for a financial payout following a major eight-million-dollar price-fixing class-action settlement. Meat processing giants JBS and National Beef agreed to the massive financial compromise after a 2022 national lawsuit alleged the companies operated an unlawful conspiracy to restrict supply and artificially inflate raw beef prices across Canada starting in 2015. Under the newly announced terms, JBS will contribute roughly 7.5 million dollars to the settlement fund, while National Beef will pay 495,000 dollars.
Individual payout amounts for local shoppers have not yet been finalized, as the proposed agreements still require official authorization during upcoming provincial court hearings scheduled for this fall. The legal resolution follows hot on the heels of the recent 500-million-dollar Loblaw bread price-fixing payouts that rolled out to Canadian households earlier this spring. Meanwhile, local legal teams confirm that parallel class-action proceedings are actively continuing against remaining industry defendants Cargill and Tyson.
