Imposter Syndrome? Everyone has it.

Did I know how to start a business? NOPE! But I did it anyway! Here's what I've learned about the dreaded Imposter who still shows up from time to time.

Nobody really knows what they're doing, so just do it anyway!

I've had to defend my rates a lot lately: why I charge so much, why I can't do the job for x-amount of dollars, etc.

I have to stick to my rates. I know they're not cheap; I'M not cheap. I provide a high-quality service that quite frankly, not everyone can.

That being said, I'm also not the most expensive!

So here are my thoughts on voice over rates.

Listen, I know that my services aren’t cheap. They’re not meant to be. I’m providing a high-quality service.

Get yourself some Peters!

You know how every group chat of 3 women has a stupid name? Ours is “Peter Canada”. There’s a reason behind it: I booked a spot for Petro Canada a couple of years ago and when I told the group chat, it autocorrected to “Peter”. So now, we are “The Peter’s.”

We are all voice actors and since it’s a small, niche business, we support each other daily - professionally and personally! These women have become some of my best friends! But it’s not often we get to get together in person.

On that rare occasion that we’re all in the same vicinity, we are Peters Who Lunch!

Owning your own business and working solo is lonely. And I’ve found it’s important to make those social connections as often as I can- more deliberately than I would if I worked in an office, with people.

I’m so grateful for Lisa and Mary Anne! They’ve helped me with negotiating, advised on how I might further my career, talked me down when I blew an audition and generally tell me how wonderful and talented I am! 😁 Of course, I do the same for them (and I feel it’s all absolutely true!).

That’s something you may take for granted if you work with other people (whether you like them or not) and I’ve learned it’s such an important part to my work wellness!

Thanks, Peters, you’re the absolute best!

One of my latest voiceover projects is a commercial for Libro Credit Union!

I worked with Ian at McAlpine Studios, whom I've known for about 10 years now. We used to work together each year at a fashion show fundraiser that I emceed and he would expertly produce the A/V for.

Plus, I love working with local companies to promote their businesses.

Sharing your contacts? NOPE!

Have you ever been asked to share yours? I'd love to hear how you handled it.

Although I’m specifically talking about the voiceover business, I really think this resonates with many business owners, especially sales and service-based entrepreneurs.

The tone of this blog is different from my others but the topic came up (again) when I was chatting with some colleagues about how they were asked for their entire contact list! While it may seem obvious to you, here are several reasons why you shouldn't share (or ask!).

Is there anything I can ask for help with? HECK YES!! Those are listed too!
