The village of Elora hosted a party Aug 1st on the pedestrian bridge in Elora as kick off to Food Day Canada 20th anniversary celebrations, The late Anita Stewart (Canada Food Day founder) arranged what she called the world's largest barbecue back in 2003 to support the Canadian beef industry when USA closed the borders to Canadian beef after a case of mad cow disease was discovered in Alberta. Since then, the Saturday of August Civic Holiday weekend has become known as " Food Day Canada". The day celebrates Canadian grown food. Earlier this year the Food Day in Canada Act was passed in the Senate and House of Commons. Stewart was a former resident of Elora, so it is fitting that the kickoff to the 20th anniversary celebrations start in Elora. Visitors to the event purchased $5 tickets and then could sample foods from various Elora restaurants set up along the bridge. (Sharon Grose/Ontario Farmer)
