The Londoner is a free weekly community newspaper that has served London and the surrounding area with grassroots neighbourhood news for over a decade. The paper was founded in 2002 by journalist Phillip McLeod, a former editor-in-chief for the London Free Press, and retired municipal politician Gord Hume, an author and speaker focused on civic development. By highlighting the positive side of local news and focusing specifically on stories about and by residents of London often overlooked by daily media, the Londoner grew into one of the largest independent community newspapers in Canada when it was sold in 2005 to Bowes Publishers, a subsidiary of Sun Media Corp. Today the Londoner is owned by Postmedia Network but its mission remains the same. Inside, readers can find colourful photos and community interest stories about how their family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues are living, plus a mix of local arts and culture that defines London’s uniqueness and a carefully curated selection of work from its sister paper, the Free Press, London’s paper of record.
