My mother-in-law moved in with us after her stroke, couldn’t speak properly anymore, hands barely worked. She’d been a master crocheter for sixty years but gave up hope. I found this pattern through Maria’s shop on the she specializes in therapeutic patterns for seniors recovering from illness. Started working on it beside her bed every evening, she’d watch my clumsy fingers, shake her head, point corrections. Slowly her hands began guiding mine, muscle memory returning. Three months later she picked up her own hook. These doilies represent her comeback, each petal proof that determination heals. Now she has her own shop on the selling recovery patterns to other stroke survivors. Her speech is still broken but her hands create miracles again.

I did not spend $50 on a Comfy. I spent $200 on yarn, lost feeling in two fingers, and called it character development.
It started as a joke in the craft aisle, standing there in leggings, coffee going cold in the cart, convincing myself I was being ā€œpractical.ā€ By day three, the living room looked like a sheep exploded. My husband stepped over piles of yarn like they were crime scene evidence and just kept saying, ā€œLooks cozy, babe,ā€ which is marriage code for ā€œI’m scared to ask what this costs.ā€
I was making it for my mom. She’s been cold since chemo started, not regular cold, that deep tired kind where even her voice sounds wrapped in a blanket. I wanted to give her something my hands had touched a thousand times. Something ridiculous and soft and stubborn, like trying not to cry in the parking lot after her appointments.
When I finally gave it to her, one sleeve was a little longer than the other and I’d definitely missed a stitch somewhere near the shoulder. She put it on anyway, tucked her knees up, and smiled for the first time all week. My husband snapped a picture of us laughing because Mom said she looked like a ā€œvery expensive marshmallow.ā€
A few days later, he surprised me with that photo turned into a little wooden keepsake, with my original line underneath about the $200 yarn mistake. I set it right by my basket of leftover yarn.
So yes, I could’ve bought the Comfy. But this one has my fingerprints in it, my panic, my prayers, my mom’s laugh. Worth every tangled, overpriced inch.

My grandmother made blankets for everyone in her community her entire life. She is the one who taught me to crochet ? it's been a year since I lost her, but now I'll never forget her pattern.

I free handed this and I’m so proud of it 🄹 My hands were shaking the whole time, not because it was hard, but because I kept thinking about my grandpa sitting at the kitchen table, tapping his fingers on his coffee mug, telling me cardinals were ā€œlittle red reminders that love doesn’t leave.ā€ He passed in February and my grandma has been trying so hard to be okay that it almost hurts to watch. She still sets out two plates sometimes and then quietly puts one back in the cabinet like nobody noticed. I started this last night in my old hoodie with paint on the sleeves, no stencil, no tracing, just me, a pencil, and that heavy quiet the house gets after everyone goes to bed. I almost threw it away twice because one wing looked off, then I heard his voice in my head saying, ā€œDon’t fuss it to death, kid.ā€ So I kept going. This morning I took a picture of it and had it made into a little glass suncatcher on Tedooo for my grandma’s kitchen window. When it came, the red caught the afternoon light and threw tiny warm spots all over her table. She didn’t say anything at first. She just touched the glass with two fingers and cried into that same old dish towel she keeps on her shoulder. Then she smiled and said, ā€œHe would’ve loved that you made it yourself.ā€ I know it’s not perfect, but it came from my whole heart, and for a minute, grief didn’t win. Love did.

My yarn stash got totally out of hand, so I started working on yarn where I didn't already have a project in mind. I found wonderful instructions for making simple crochet baskets and am making a bunch of them for family and friends. One once went to a neighbor who brought a huge basket of wool. She is using it to hold her small quilts. I am currently working on basket number nine!
These baskets are incredibly easy to make and only use one single crochet - so they're a perfect project to make while watching TV
