Located in Macoun, Saskatchewan, the Nova Blare Weather Station (named after my Granddaughter Ekko Anna Nova and my Grandson Soren Blare) was erected and placed into operation on July 28, 2012. When searching for it on Weather Underground it is called ISASKATC41 and on the Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP) it is known as EW1708. Quality control is monitored using MADIS (Meterorological Assim

ilation Data Ingest System). www.madis.noaa.gov

The station sensors include barometer, temperature, humidity, rainfall, solar radiation, ultra violet and anemometer and wind direction. Using all the sensors the station calculates dew point, windchill, heat index, precipitation rate, wind run gust and average speed, and cloud base. Data is collected and sent every 2.5 seconds. Conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds today.

A low pressure system over southern Saskatchewan will support the development of weak thunderstorms early this afternoon. Some of these thunderstorms may develop funnel clouds.

These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada.

Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.

Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected], call 1-800-239-0484 or post reports on X using .
