JUST IN: CARNEY WARNS STELCO’S U.S. OWNER — CANADA IS READY TO ENFORCE THE DEAL

Mark Carney is putting an American steel company on notice — and the dispute could soon become a legal fight over Canadian jobs.

In 2024, Cleveland-Cliffs acquired Canadian steelmaker Stelco for $3.4 billion. The deal came with a key commitment: protect Canadian employment for five years.

Now, that promise is being tested.

Nearly 350 workers in Hamilton could be affected as Stelco moves to shut down parts of its production. The company points to weaker demand and says some employees may be offered positions at another facility.

But the numbers have raised questions. When the layoffs were announced, only 46 openings were reportedly available.

Carney says Stelco has binding legal obligations, and Ottawa is prepared to use the Investment Canada Act.

So what happens next — a court battle, or a new deal to protect the jobs?

💬 What do you think?

FRANCE JUST REOPENED A FISHING FIGHT WITH CANADA — AND OTTAWA IS NOT HAPPY

The warm diplomacy between Mark Carney and Emmanuel Macron is running into an old and very sensitive dispute: fishing rights off Newfoundland.

According to the transcript, France is pursuing plans to fish for crab in waters Canada considers under its jurisdiction, despite years of international negotiations over the issue.

The dispute is particularly sensitive because of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, the French territory off Newfoundland. The transcript argues that Paris continues to claim fishing interests in the region while Canada and France are simultaneously trying to deepen their broader relationship.

That creates an awkward contradiction.

Ottawa is looking toward Europe for stronger trade and strategic ties. But even as Carney and Macron exchange warm words, one of the oldest Canada–France disputes is suddenly back in the spotlight.

And this time, it is not about diplomacy in Brussels.

It is about who gets access to the fish.

JUST IN: CARNEY BRIEFLY TOPPED NOBEL PEACE PRIZE ODDS — THE PRIZE TRUMP SAYS HE DESERVES

For a few hours, Mark Carney was sitting at the top of a prediction market for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, with his odds reaching 14%.

The timing is striking.

Carney’s international profile has risen as his government pushes back against Washington, expands ties with Europe and seeks new trade partners. His January Davos speech calling on middle powers to work together was followed by growing attention in Europe.

But there is a major caveat: prediction markets are speculation, and the Nobel Committee’s shortlist is secret. The file notes that nominations closed in January and the full list will remain sealed for decades.

Still, the political irony is hard to miss.

Trump has repeatedly said he deserves the Nobel. Now the Canadian leader he has spent months pressuring is suddenly being discussed for the same prize.

October 9 could make this story even more interesting.

JUST IN: CARNEY WARNS STELCO’S U.S. OWNER — CANADA WILL ENFORCE THE DEAL

Carney is taking a much harder line with Cleveland-Cliffs after Stelco announced major cuts in Hamilton.

The $3.4 billion takeover was approved with five years of binding employment commitments. Now, up to 500 workers could be affected, while the union says only 46 openings are available at Nanticoke.

Ottawa says it is prepared to use every legal power available — including the same Investment Canada Act that was used against Stelco’s previous U.S. owner.

The company says production is being shifted, not abandoned.

But if the numbers don’t add up, this dispute could move from the factory floor straight into a Canadian courtroom.

CANADA IS QUIETLY MOVING TOWARD EUROPE — AND WASHINGTON IS WATCHING

For the first time, the EU has publicly floated something extraordinary: creating a new form of associate membership for Canada.

Mark Carney welcomed the proposal — while making one thing clear: Canada is not seeking full EU membership. The legal framework for this new status does not even exist yet.

So why is Europe opening this door now?

The answer lies in what Canada has been building beyond Washington.

Trade with countries outside the United States has reportedly grown 17% over the past year, while nearly one-third of Canadian exports now go elsewhere — the highest share in four decades.

And Europe is becoming the centerpiece.

Trade, critical minerals, energy, technology and defense are all moving closer together. But one issue remains deliberately unresolved: defense commitments.

If that question changes, the consequences could reach far beyond trade.

JUST IN: CANADA WORKS AROUND TRUMP — AT AMERICA’S OWN G20 TRADE MEETING

Washington expected Canada to come to Milwaukee looking for a way back into the U.S. market.

Instead, Ottawa arrived with something else on the agenda: meetings with Europe and India.

The timing could hardly be more striking. Just one day after Washington’s new ban shut much of the Canadian alcohol market out of the United States, Canada’s trade minister walked into an American-hosted meeting focused on building access elsewhere.

And the numbers reveal why.

Canada says trade with countries outside the U.S. grew by 17% in the past year, while nearly one-third of Canadian exports now go to destinations beyond America — the highest share in four decades.

But there’s an even bigger fight unfolding inside Washington’s own agenda: proposed changes to the WTO’s “most favored nation” rules.

If that system weakens, Canada’s diversification strategy could become far more important than anyone expected.

CARNEY JUST FLIPPED POILIEVRE’S ATTACK — THEN BROUGHT TRUMP INTO THE FIGHT

Poilievre came armed with one explosive issue: Canada’s soaring diesel prices.

He demanded answers on taxes, refining capacity and why Canadians are paying more than Americans. But Carney didn’t stay on the defensive.

Instead, he turned the attack back on Poilievre — invoking his 20 years in Parliament and challenging him to finally help pass the government’s legislation.

Then the confrontation took an even bigger turn.

Carney’s remarks about Trump’s repeated talk of Canada becoming the 51st state suddenly put the domestic fuel fight into a much larger context: economic pressure, Canadian sovereignty and how much control Ottawa really has.

One side demanded immediate price relief.

The other pointed to legislation, major projects and Canada’s longer-term independence.

And Carney had one final move that dominated the exchange.

CANADA JUST OPENED A NEW ENERGY ROUTE — AND THE U.S. ISN’T IN THE MIDDLE OF IT

For decades, Canada’s energy exports had one obvious direction: south.

Now, that equation is changing.

LNG Canada has officially cleared the next major hurdle, with Phase 2 set to double the facility’s export capacity. The project will send significantly more Canadian gas across the Pacific — but the most interesting part is not how much Canada plans to export.

It’s who is standing behind the project.

Shell is joined by major Asian energy companies from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and China. Several of the countries expected to buy Canadian LNG are also financially tied to the facility itself.

That creates something Canada has been trying to build for years: more options.

But doubling exports also brings another challenge — environmental concerns and questions about whether Canada can expand quickly while maintaining public and Indigenous confidence.

The energy map is shifting. The next question is how far Ottawa intends to take it.

TRUMP DEMANDS A CANADIAN APOLOGY — OTTAWA ANSWERS WITH SILENCE

Donald Trump says Canada will return to Washington in just 3–4 weeks with an apology.

Ottawa’s response? Almost nothing.

As a new U.S. import ban hits Canadian alcohol, dairy and other products, the pressure is growing. At the same time, Stelco workers in Hamilton are facing major layoffs as parts of the operation are set to shut down.

But Carney has already rejected the idea of signing a deal simply because Washington sets the deadline.

And the timing of Trump’s prediction raises another question. His 3–4 week window lands just before the U.S. midterm elections.

Ottawa is now talking about what it can control: protecting Canadian workers, strengthening the domestic economy and finding more markets beyond the United States.

The real test may be whether Canada can hold its position while the economic pressure keeps building.

CARNEY WALKS AWAY FROM TRUMP’S DEAL — HILLMAN REVEALS WHAT HE REFUSED

The U.S. called it the “best deal” available. Ottawa saw something very different.

Former Canadian ambassador Kirsten Hillman says Carney did not walk away because of the political noise surrounding the negotiations. He walked away because of what was actually written in the draft texts.

Steel. Autos. Lumber.

According to Hillman, the proposed terms could have put key Canadian industries in an economically unsustainable position. And that crossed a line Ottawa was not prepared to accept.

But there is another layer to this standoff.

With Washington insisting it is in no rush, Carney is facing pressure to decide how long Canada can hold its position while businesses absorb the cost.

The talks may look frozen. Behind them, however, the real battle is over what Canada is willing to put on the table — and what it simply refuses to sign.
