Milton mayoral candidate Nadeem Akbar is promising a tax freeze and zero-based budgeting if elected on Oct. 26. 🗳️

“Families and seniors are under financial pressure, and council has a responsibility to scrutinize how public money is spent,” said Akbar, an executive vice president of technology at BIA Group.

He proposes freezing tax increases until an audit is completed and requiring town departments to justify spending, “examining existing spending as well as new proposals, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency.”

Akbar also emphasizes “complete communities”, ensuring new housing comes with infrastructure, recreational services and local job opportunities. He sits on the Halton Police Board and ran for the Conservatives in last year’s federal election.

Crawford Lake’s iconic boardwalk has reopened after a $1.6 million makeover, making the scenic trail fully accessible for strollers and mobility devices. 🌿

The 1-km boardwalk was originally built in 1965 and had been closed for about a year for reconstruction. New signage, developed with the Indigenous Partners Council, will be installed by the end of September to share the lake’s ecological and cultural significance.

The federal government contributed $912,000, Ontario put in $759,924, and Halton Region provided additional funds. The park, which sees 100,000+ visitors annually, is home to a rare meromictic lake and a reconstructed 15th-century Iroquoian longhouse village.

A small plane made an emergency landing in a field in west Milton Saturday night after the pilot experienced mechanical issues. 🛩️

The aircraft landed safely on Bell School Line, just north of No. 2 Sideroad, around 8 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Milton firefighters and Halton police responded to assist.

No other details are available at this time.

The Milton Fall Fair returns Sept. 25-27 to the same 26-acre property on Robert Street it has called home since 1864. 🚜

The fair features livestock displays, homecraft exhibits, agricultural education and competitions, along with demolition derbies, truck and tractor pulls, a midway, food and live entertainment.

This year’s theme recognizes agriculture in all its forms, from backyard gardens and urban beekeeping to local food production and sustainability.

Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for children 5-12, and free for kids under 5. Family passes and online discounts are available. Parking is $10.

“Community is built, not delivered,” said Rachelle Orr of the Halton Agricultural Society.

RBC Foundation is donating $500,000 to upgrade Crawford Lake’s Interpretive and Education Centre, making it more energy-efficient, accessible and culturally inclusive. 🌿

The funding supports a retrofit to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, improve accessibility with fully accessible pathways, entrances and gender-neutral washrooms, and preserve Indigenous heritage with a new climate-controlled storage facility for 10,000 artifacts.

Crawford Lake Conservation Area is part of the UNESCO Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve and welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually. It features a meromictic lake and a reconstructed 15th-century Longhouse Village.

“This is a significant step toward creating a low carbon, climate resilient community space that will serve our visitors for many years,” said Conservation Halton CEO Chandra Sharma.

Milton is packed with events this Labour Day weekend, from steam engines to free movies and community celebrations. 🚜

Steam-Era (Sept. 4-7) - Ontario’s agricultural history comes alive with steam engines, antique tractors and vintage cars at Hume’s Auction Farm. $15, kids 12 & under free.

Halton County Radial Railway (Sept. 4-6) - Unlimited historic streetcar rides on two kilometres of scenic track. 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Family Movie Night (Sept. 4) - Free screening of The Princess Bride at Brookville Park at 8 p.m. Bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Milton Farmers’ Market (Sept. 5) - Downtown Main Street, 8 a.m. – noon with produce, meats, baked goods and more.

Halton Public Health is investigating a confirmed measles case in Milton with potential exposures at several locations between Aug. 23 and 29. 🦠

Exposure locations include:

Real Canadian Superstore (820 Main St. E.): Aug. 23, 9 p.m. – 12 a.m.

HomeSense (55 Ontario St. S.): Aug. 23, 4:30 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Santa Maria Medical Centre (604 Santa Maria Blvd.): Aug. 25, 28 and 29

“Measles is a serious disease that can be prevented with a safe and effective vaccine,” said Dr. Patrick Galange, associate medical officer of health.

Visitors to these locations during those times should check immunization records, watch for symptoms (fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, rash) for 21 days, and call ahead before visiting any health-care provider.
