Three(3) Things Every Immigrant Mum Must Learn Early
Nobody really prepares you for motherhood abroad.
You pack your bags with hope, courage and dreams for your children but soon you realize that love alone won’t carry you through this journey.
Here are three practical lessons every immigrant mum must learn early which is often in the hard way.
1️⃣ LEARN THE SYSTEM QUICKLY OR IT WILL OVERWHELM YOU
Back home, you relied on people.
Abroad, you rely on systems.
Healthcare appointments, school forms, daycare waitlists (my son Bubu is on this one😭), work schedules, government letters—everything runs on structure and deadlines.
Missing one email or misunderstanding one process can cost you time, money or peace of mind.
As an immigrant mum, you quickly learn to:
• Read every letter twice
• Ask questions without fear
• Keep reminders and documents
• Speak up for your child—even when your accent is still shaking; suprí supri or not, you must defend your child o🧏🏼♀️
The system doesn’t adjust because you’re tired. You must learn how it works.
2️⃣ STOP TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING ALONE
Many of us were raised to believe that strength means suffering quietly.
But abroad, that mindset will break you.
You cannot work, raise children, manage a home, heal from migration stress and still pretend you’re fine alone.
Every immigrant mum must learn to accept help:
• Community programs
• School support
• Faith groups
• Online mum circles
• Even counselling
Asking for help is not weakness.
It is survival and wisdom.
3️⃣ REDEFINE SUCCESS FOR THIS SEASON OF YOUR LIFE
Success abroad looks different especially in the early years.
You may have been educated, established or comfortable back home.
Now you’re starting again, taking survival jobs, staying home because childcare is expensive or rebuilding from zero.
Here’s the truth immigrant mums learn early:
• Stability is success
• Peace is progress
• Showing up daily is an achievement
This season is not failure.
It is foundation-building.
Immigrant motherhood will humble you, stretch you, and teach you lessons nobody talks about.
But when you learn these lessons early, you don’t just survive—you create a stronger future for your children.
