ICNA Canada Urges Government Action to Secure Detained Canadians on Humanitarian Mission Toronto, ON – The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Canada is urging the Government of Canada to take immediate action to ensure the safety and release of Canadian citizens detained by Israeli authorities while participating in a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza.
According to information from Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Global Affairs Canada, six Canadians — Mskwaasin Agnew, Devoney Ellis, Nimâ Machouf, Sadie Mees, Khurram Musti Khan, and Nikita Stapleton — remain in Israeli custody following the interception of the Sumud Flotilla in international waters. Earlier,
another flotilla was also detained, resulting in the arrest of Zaheera Soomar, Rabab Moustapha, and another Canadian humanitarian worker.
The detained Canadians were part of an international effort to deliver essential food and medical aid to Gaza, where civilians continue to face dire shortages due to the ongoing blockade.
“The detention of humanitarian workers in international waters is deeply concerning and contradicts international law,” said ICNA Canada. “Canada must act swiftly to protect its citizens and uphold its commitment to human rights and humanitarian principles.”
ICNA Canada is also alarmed by reports of mistreatment and the use of drone attacks on flotilla vessels,
including Canadian Boats to Gaza. The organization calls on Ottawa to:
• Secure the immediate and safe release of all detained Canadians.
• Ensure safe passage for humanitarian missions.
• Pursue diplomatic measures to prevent further violations of international law.
“The safety and dignity of Canadian citizens must be defended without delay,” ICNA Canada stated.
