Between 12 and 18 months, babies experience rapid growth in their physical, cognitive, and social skills. During this period, many babies start walking independently, becoming more adventurous and confident. They refine fine motor skills, such as stacking blocks and using utensils, and improve hand-eye coordination with activities like scribbling.

Cognitively, babies enjoy problem-solving tasks like fitting shapes into holes and navigating simple puzzles. They mimic adults and develop a sense of object permanence, making games like hide-and-seek exciting. Language skills blossom with the emergence of first words and simple phrases, and they begin to follow basic commands.

Socially and emotionally, babies show strong attachment to caregivers but also start exploring their independence. Interactive play, such as rolling a ball, and parallel play with other children become common. Engaging activities during this stage include reading, music and dance, outdoor exploration, art projects, and interactive toys. Establishing routines provides a sense of security, aiding in their overall development.

Cheese for Babies!

As long as it is pasteurized to minimize the risk of foodborne illness, may be introduced as soon as baby is , which is generally around 6 months of age. While cheese can be high in sodium, an occasional taste is fine as part of a balanced diet.

Thinly spread pasteurized soft cheeses like mascarpone, fresh ricotta on toasted bread or other finger foods. Alternatively, offer some in a bowl for baby to scoop.

At this age, you can also offer long, flat pieces of pasteurized semi-firm cheeses like cheddar or swiss cheese for baby to grab, hold, and munch.

Shredded cheese can be melted into a variety of foods, but sprinkle sparingly, as large globs of melted cheese increase the risk of choking.

Salty cheeses like feta or parmesan contain a lot of sodium, so try avoiding it. Avoid cubes and large chunks of cheese due to increased choking risk, and do not offer unpasteurized cheese or cheeses that are mold or smear-ripened, such as or due to the risk of foodborne illness.
