Canadian Immigrant Canadian Immigrant is a national platform for immigrants in Canada with events across Canada.

Founded in 2004, the magazine began with a mandate to "inform, educate and motivate" immigrants to Canada and assist them in their new found journey. Since then, the magazine has grown to be the only national multi-platform brand for all immigrants to Canada, on topics from careers to education to settlement. Canadian Immigrant not only connects newcomers in Canada, but also aspiring immigrants from more than 150 countries.

His top tip for other newcomers is: “For newcomers to Canada, my advice is to place emphasis on ‘new’ and gradually let go of ‘comers,’ replacing it with ‘Canadian’ — a simple but meaningful shift in perspective. It opens the possibility of engaging with a new reality with openness, curiosity and responsibility.”

Meet 2026 Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award Recipient Nketti Johnston-Taylor, originally from Sierra Leone, she is the CEO at Centre for Newcomers.

Her top tip for other newcomers is: “Don’t wait for permission to belong. So many newcomers spend years trying to prove they deserve a seat at the table. My advice is this: recognize your value from day one. Your experiences matter. Your voice matters. Your culture matters. Your perspective matters. Canada does not become stronger despite immigration. It becomes stronger because of it. Build your network early. Volunteer. Seek mentors. Stay curious. Be willing to learn. Ask questions. Take risks. But never feel that you must erase who you are in order to succeed. Most importantly, be patient with yourself because starting over takes courage. One day you will look back and realize that what felt like an ending was actually the beginning of something extraordinary.”

Her top tip for other newcomers is: “It’s difficult to focus on only one tip for newcomers to Canada. I have three. One, become fluent in Canada’s both official languages. Two, create a strong professional network and, three, continuously invest in higher education and professional development.”

Her top tip for other newcomers is: “My top advice for newcomers is to believe in yourself, be open to building connections and never be afraid to ask for help. When I came to Canada, I quickly learned that success is not something you achieve alone. The people who supported, encouraged and believed in me during difficult times played an important role in helping me build a new life. Those experiences taught me that strong relationships and community connections can open doors and create opportunities that might otherwise seem out of reach.

“Education is also one of the greatest investments you can make in yourself. Whether it is learning English or French, pursuing formal education, developing new skills or gaining professional certifications, lifelong learning creates opportunities and helps build confidence. Never stop learning, because education not only opens doors — it empowers you to shape your own future and contribute to your community.”
