Barbie and Hot Wheels weren’t just toy icons...

They were born from the creativity of a married couple who co-founded Mattel!

Ruth Handler created Barbie in 1959 after noticing her daughter preferred imagining adult lives for her paper dolls.

She wanted a doll that let girls picture themselves as anything: a nurse, a pilot, a businesswoman...

Meanwhile, her husband Elliot Handler dreamed up Hot Wheels in 1968.

Frustrated by slow, realistic toy cars, he envisioned flashier, faster models inspired by California’s car culture. Working with engineers and a former GM designer, he brought speed and style to kids’ playrooms worldwide!

Together, the Handlers shaped Mattel into a cultural force: Ruth’s doll empowering generations of girls, Elliot’s cars thrilling generations of racers!

Different toys but same dream to let kids imagine bigger worlds.
