The Universe Next Door

A Brief History of Dream Pod 9

Dream Pod 9 finds its early roots in Ianus Publications founded in 1987 to publish the Protoculture Addicts Anime Magazine and which later also published Mecha Press magazine dedicated to Japanese SF animation, mecha, modeling and gaming. Talsorian Games to publish an Alternate Reality Universe line of products based on RTG's successful Cyber

punk 2020. The game design team at Ianus became known as Dream Pod 9 and when on to publish Jovian Chronicles for RTG’s Mekton II game system. DP9 was then hired in 1993 by Palladium Books, publishers of the Robotech and Macross II roleplaying games, to produce three volumes of the Macross II Deck Plans books. In 1994, DP9 began developing its first home grown game called Heavy Gear Fighter, which was the Card Fighter game that introduced gamers to the world of Heavy Gear. We worked on other projects including the Project A-ko roleplaying game, all the while continuing to work on our own game system. Heavy Gear the Roleplaying and Tactical Game was released in the summer of 1995. It became a success with its anime inspired artwork and realistic warfare game mechanics. Due to phenomenal growth of the game in late 1995 we decided to split Ianus into two new companies, Protoculture, which would continue to publish Protoculture Addicts magazine and Dream Pod 9, which became a fully fledged company publishing gaming books and miniatures. A year later, DP9 entered in a partnership with computer game giant Activision to create computer games based on the Heavy Gear property. Both Heavy Gear: the New Breed, and its advanced sequel, Heavy Gear II: Black Talon, took the computer game world by storm! In late 1999, Dream Pod 9 licensed the worldwide television rights to its popular Heavy Gear game universe to Sony Pictures Family Entertainment. The 40-episode computer animated series debuted in syndication across the world in early 2001. Dream Pod 9’s game universes include Heavy Gear, Jovian Chronicles, Gear Krieg, Tribe 8, and Core Command. With numerous RPG rulebooks and sourcebooks published for each, along with miniature wargame rulebooks for Heavy Gear, Jovian Chronicles, and Gear Krieg and full lines of pewter and resin miniatures. In 2003 the team behind Dream Pod 9 started work on a new project to work on action scenes for movies. Dream Pod Entertainment was created along with the Shadow Squad Stunt Team. Members of Shadow Squad have worked on numerous productions in Canada and Internationally one of the biggest being the 300, which film here in Montreal. Heavy Gear Blitz became the dedicated tabletop wargame version of Heavy Gear in 2008. We manufacture a complete line of 1/144 scale pewter and resin miniatures for the game. Plus, our first successful Kickstarter at the end of 2014 made possible plastic miniatures for 4 factions (North, South, CEF, and Caprice) in the game. And we recently ran additional successful plastic miniature Kickstarters to make 3 more factions (Peace River, NuCoal, and Utopia), which are available to customers now. Jovian Wars is the updated edition of our Jovian Chronicles miniatures wargame. In 2017 we ran a successful Kickstarter for a new line of miniatures, starting with the 2 main factions. The Venus faction miniatures have been added since then and additional Kickstarters are planned to make all the Jovian Wars factions available in the future. Dream Pod 9 currently has an outside team working on a new 4th Edition of the Heavy Gear Roleplaying Game, which we plan to release in 2022. Address in Canada and Contact Info:

Tribe 8 - Tribes in the Dark Roleplaying Game - Kickstarter Launching Soon!

For over two decades, Tribe 8 has captivated roleplayers with its haunting vision of a post-apocalyptic Montreal, where humanity struggles to survive in the shadows of monstrous beings and a forgotten past. Blending mystical horror with deeply personal stories of trauma, faith, and rebellion, it forged a legacy as one of the most emotionally resonant RPGs of its time.

Tribes in the Dark brings this cult classic into a new era. A standalone tabletop roleplaying game of struggle, transformation, dreams, and resistance, it reimagines the world of Vimary through the Forged in the Dark system.

Dream Pod 9 and development team are preparing a Kickstarter to pay for new artwork required and other costs with a tentative launch date set for Tuesday August 19th, 2025. Click the link below to visit the Tribes in the Dark Roleplaying Game Kickstarter pre-launch page and then click the "Notify me on Launch" button to be informed when the Kickstarter launches later in August.

Dream Pod 9 at Historicon Day 3

We had a great Friday running demos and making lots of sales. The Heavy Gear Blitz Tournament was a massive success with 11 players and we had Ben play as a ringer to make 12. We started just after 7 pm and ran 3 rounds ending just after midnight. Everyone had a fun time and received a Heavy Gear 30th Anniversary Keychain as a thank you for participating. The winners were announced with Landon Jennings taking the 1st Place Trophy and $60 in DP9 product. And Brian Sherry placed 2nd with Trophy, and Tony Sandoval coming in 3rd with Trophy. Plus Corrin Krouch won our Smoking Boots for last place and a new set of Pink D6 dice as a prize, because it must have been your dice's fault! Check out photos of the players and 4 winners plus the various tables and players over the 3 rounds.

Thank you to all the players and Dream Pod 9's Pod Squad members of John, Joe, Robert, and Ben for organizing and running the tournament. We'll be back in Lancaster, PA for Fall-In! 2025 this November with another tournament and hope to see you there.

New Mammoth Strider 3D Model Preview and DP9 News!

Today we have another surprise for the Northern faction players of Heavy Gear Blitz. We have a new Mammoth Strider 3D Model by Duymon to preview. He previously did the Damocles Artillery Strider and the new Mammoth uses the same legs/feet and shoulders. Duymon also made another amazing cockpit with the pilot and gunner and closed or open hatch parts. Plus he made all the Mammoth variant weapon arm parts and a new Apex Hammer for a future Command Mammoth variant. And we added the Bombard LFG arms from the Damocles to give the Mammoth another new future variant. Checkout preview images of the Mammoth and its variants, including exploded parts view and the HGB 3.1 Mammoth model stats.

Alain over at Fusion Models will be doing 3D tests prints this week and then getting the Mammoth assembled and painted for the end of June. Once that's done we'll get photos taken and make the black box cover sheet. Our goal is to have the Mammoth up for sale on Friday July 4th 2025.

Some DP9 News today as well, the Dream Pod 9 office will be closed from Today thru June 29th for a staff vacation before the summer convention season begins. We'll be back in the office on Monday June 30th and get all orders received cast up and packed that week and shipped for Canada and International customers. US orders will ship the following Monday July 7th, 2025 by the US Postal Service.
