the kite runner - khaled hosseini: 5⭐️
themes: guilt, redemption, betrayal, family relationships, religion, friendship, immigration, ethnicity, racism, memory and past
this historical fiction starts in 1970s Afghanistan, before moving through the soviet invasion, the rise of the taliban and our main character’s new life in california
we follow the story of Amir, the son of a wealthy pashtun businessman and Hassan, the son of his father’s hazara servant. these two are best friends, but social divisions and betrayal break their bond. years later as an adult in america, Amir has a dangerous chance to redeem himself by returning to war-torn Afghanistan to rescue Hassan’s son
throughout the novel, amir desperately searched for paternal approval, there’s lots of unspoken love and expectations… amir and hassan’s bond is tested countless times in the book. betraying your closest, most loyal friends/family leaves a wound that shapes your life. amir atones for his past by facing his precious mistakes, saving hassan 🪁
the kite runner exposes the ethnic and social hierarchies of afghanistan… the discrimination faced by the hazara minority compared to the pashtun majority. the characters are constantly haunted by history, and by the fact that the past cannot be erased, it can be confronted!
the book is hauntingly powerful; raw and intense, it paints a picture of how political collapse, violence and war destroy a country and the innocence of children
a few symbols i noticed: the kites are a symbol of happiness and guilt. the cleft lip is a symbol of status in society (hassan’s poverty). when baba fixes it, the fatherly love is secretly expressed. amir gets his face destroyed, his lips becoming a sign of his redemption. his identity merges with hassan
the kite runner is deeply emotional; it’s a beautifully written book about friendship, betrayal and the heavy burden of guilt
i was such a fan of hosseini’s writing that i have started a thousand splendid suns!
