Day 8.
Trying clover in the backyard.
Hopefully less upkeep, maybe more return.

We prepped the soil, seeded, and watered (and caught up with the neighbors 😅).

Added stacked up patio planters where the sun actually hits. 3x3 for tomatoes, peppers, chilis, herbs and strawberries.

And managed to kept the compost going before sunset.

Day 7

Built 3 raised beds in the only sunny spot we have, right in the front yard.

Cleared the area, leveled everything, and filled them with cardboard, beaches, soil and compost.

Took most of the day... but we a a little help along the way 😉.

Day 6.

Work days limit our time and amount of tasks that we can accomplish.

Luckily our autonomous feeder and self watering system increase our coop's autonomy.

It's finally time to uncover our garlics!

We plant them on Canadian Thanksgiving and cover them with 2 feet of leaves for protection against the winter cold.

Making sure the weather stays above zero and keeping a bag of leaves for last minute cover if needed.

We are building our garden beds in the coming days. Stay tuned 🔁

Day 5.
Turned an old platform into a 2-bin compost system.

Coffee grounds, eggshells, food scraps...nothing wasted. Will be adding greens and browns to the mix to start it off with a bang!

If we want to grow more food, we need to start with better soil.

Day 4 of 10.
Saturday. 🤯

No time was wasted as it was a sunny Canadian spring day.

We had to start the front garden ground prep and have been eager to provide more space to the hens with this creative DIY HENmobile 🫣

We will grow some pantry basics: 🫜🫚🧅🥕🥔 as we only get between 5 to 6 hours of sun per day (lots of tree cover)

First steps to planning what to grow:
Plant what you eat.
Analyze the sun on your lot.
Draw your garden.
Prep the soil.
Maintenance until August 😅

It's about taking small steps towards producing more ourselves. We still visit the grocery every week... unfortunately, but its still worth it for our health (physical and mental).
