Canadian icon Céline Dion made an emotional return to full-length concerts in Paris, performing for a sold-out crowd after six years away from touring. The 58-year-old singer, who was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome in 2022, fought back tears as she thanked fans for their patience and support.

Dion said she had promised to return and was singing “for life.” Her voice remained powerful, although several major songs were transposed lower to accommodate her condition. More than 160 projects spanning energy, critical minerals, ports, transportation, advanced manufacturing and technology are being promoted. Prime Minister Mark Carney is promoting Canadian ties with the European Union, including a possible “associate member” status, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The proposal would not mean full EU membership, and its exact form remains undefined. It could give Canada broader access to Europe’s single market and ease movement of goods, services and workers in strategic fields such as energy, artificial intelligence, defence and critical minerals.

Canada and the EU are also exploring joint infrastructure and research projects. The initiative reflects Ottawa’s effort to diversify trade and security partnerships as relations with the United States grow increasingly strained.

President Donald Trump is now publicly signalling that a deal with Canada may be approaching.

Speaking in Dublin on Saturday, Trump said Canada wants an agreement and added, “You’ll probably see a deal with Canada fairly soon.” He identified treatment of U.S. farmers and Canadian tariffs as issues that still need to be resolved. Reuters and Bloomberg both reported the comments today.

This is a notable shift from the recent escalation because Trump also downplayed the possibility of withdrawing from the USMCA/CUSMA, saying the U.S. has a good relationship with Canada. However, he provided no timetable, negotiated terms, or confirmation that formal negotiations have resumed, so this should be viewed as a positive signal rather than evidence that a deal has been finalized.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has separately maintained that Canada is ready to reach a fair agreement. For now, the existing tariffs remain in place, and the additional U.S. import restrictions scheduled for September 29 have not been cancelled.
