In this edition of Knyzka Corner, we will be discussing Survival as Victory – Ukrainian Women in the Gulag by Oksana Kis. Survival as Victory – Ukrainian Women in the Gulag, published by the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University, examines the stories of Ukrainian women who were sentenced to the Soviet Gulag in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Oksana Kis based her work on memoirs, diaries, and oral histories of over 150 women who survived the dehumanizing effects of exile and imprisonment....

🇨🇦 This is an official e-petition (e-6866) registered with the House of Commons.
It calls for a one-time pathway to Permanent Residence (PR) for Ukrainians in Canada under CUAET and other temporary humanitarian programs.
The petition is sponsored by MP Yvan Baker (Etobicoke Centre, Liberal Party).

🇨🇦 WHAT THE PETITION ASKS FOR
A special, one-time measure to allow Ukrainians already in Canada under CUAET or similar programs to begin a fair and practical path to permanent residency.

🇨🇦 WHY IT MATTERS
✅ Thousands of CUAET holders have been living and working legally in Canada for over 3 years. They pay taxes, fill labour shortages, and strengthen local communities.
✅ Dozens of thousands of Ukrainians have opened businesses, created jobs, and actively contributed to local economies and community life.
✅ They embrace and uphold Canadian values, respect the law, and integrate into Canada’s diverse culture.
✅ Many are ineligible for standard immigration programs because of limited quotas, age limits, or “non-priority” occupations.
✅ There is a precedent: in 2021, Canada created a similar pathway for Hong Kong residents.
✅ Supporting this petition means supporting Canada’s humanitarian leadership and helping people who have already proven their commitment to the country.

🇨🇦 HISTORICAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF UKRAINIANS TO CANADA
Ukrainians have played a vital role in building Canada for more than 130 years.

Between 1891 and 1914, about 150,000 Ukrainians immigrated to Canada, mainly settling across the Prairie provinces, where they helped develop agriculture and rural communities.

They contributed to the growth of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta through hard work, farming, and community building.

During World War II, over 40,000 Canadians of Ukrainian descent served in the Canadian Armed Forces, defending the values of democracy and freedom.

Ukrainian Canadians have since become integral to Canada’s social, cultural, and political life - serving as leaders, educators, entrepreneurs, artists, and public servants.

Today, more than 1.3 million Canadians claim Ukrainian heritage, continuing this legacy of contribution and community spirit.

The current generation of Ukrainians arriving under CUAET continues this proud tradition - working hard, supporting local economies, and enriching Canada’s cultural mosaic.

🇨🇦 WHY CANADIANS SHOULD CARE
Ukrainians under CUAET have become your co-workers, neighbours, classmates, and friends.
They volunteer, support local charities, and help keep essential services running.
They strengthen small towns, rural areas, and big cities alike - filling jobs, opening local stores, and building community spirit.
By supporting this petition, Canadians stand up for fairness, compassion, and shared democratic values.
This is not charity - it’s an investment in Canada’s future and in people who already call it home.

🇨🇦 PROPOSED ELIGIBILITY EXAMPLES
(The petition suggests these as guidelines, not fixed rules.)
✔️ Lived in Canada for 3 of the last 4 years
✔️ Canadian work experience: 1 year in a critical occupation or 2 years in other legal work or self-employment
✔️ Ongoing employment or business activity
✔️ Basic language & education (e.g. CELPIP 4–5, high-school education)
✔️ At least one integration indicator (children in school, relatives in Canada, study, volunteering, etc.)

🇨🇦 KEY DETAILS
Initiator: John Stadnyk (Calgary, Alberta)
MP Sponsor: Yvan Baker (Liberal Party)
Open for signatures: Oct 15 2025 – Feb 12 2026 (1:14 p.m. ET)

🇨🇦 HOW TO SIGN
Go to the official page: https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-6866
Click Sign
Enter your name, email, and Canadian address (Canadian citizens and residents only)
Confirm your signature through the email link (sent within a few minutes; check spam)

🇨🇦 WHY EVERY SIGNATURE MATTERS
A minimum of 500 verified signatures is required for official tabling in the House of Commons.
More signatures send a stronger signal to the government for a fair, transparent, and humane solution.
Each signature represents someone’s safe tomorrow, first mortgage, or child walking to school without fear.

🇨🇦 HOW E-PETITIONS WORK
They stay open for 120 days.
Once they reach 500 valid signatures, the issue is certified and formally presented to the House of Commons.
Their purpose is to raise issues and urge government discussion (see House of Commons Procedure and Practice, Chapter 22 - Public Petitions).

🇨🇦 This is about people who already call Canada home.
They work, study, volunteer, build businesses, and strengthen the very fabric of Canadian society.
For over a century, Ukrainians have stood with Canada - now it’s time for Canada to stand with them.

Please sign and share this petition across your networks and Canadian communities.
