American public figures, including Tucker Carlson and presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, have claimed that the Ukrainian government has banned Christianity.

“Banning Christians” is one of the most effective Russian disinformation myths circulating in the U.S. It exploits confusion around the Orthodox Church in Ukraine and widespread lack of knowledge about Ukraine’s religious landscape.

The reality is that around 80% of Ukrainians identify as Christians — mostly Orthodox, but also Catholic and Protestant. As with many European countries, Christianity played a defining role in forming a nation in the Middle Ages.

In our new documentary, Steven Moore, a former US House Chief of Staff and the founder of The Ukraine Freedom Project, meets Christian leaders, pastors, and scholars. Together, they unpack the history of Christianity in Ukraine — from Soviet repression to today’s wartime reality under Russian occupation.

According to United24, Russian courts have sentenced 184 Ukrainian POWs in recent months—many under vague and politicized charges. In one case, a prisoner stood in the courtroom and read poetry aloud in a quiet act of resistance and defiance.

It brought to mind my interview with Pryvit, a Montreal-based ensemble that gives voice to dissident Ukrainian poetry through original music. These are verses shaped by centuries of repression—written by poets who were exiled, imprisoned, or silenced for speaking truth to power.
