Now available from Maa Press: Ellen Burt's new book, An Impossible Fidelity.

“In this lyrical and honest memoir of growing up Quaker in the 1950s and turbulent ’60s in northwest U.S.A., Ellen Burt provides a rare glimpse into a childhood and adolescence centred in the Quaker community, with her imperfect and very human family” Helen Blum, librarian

We're delighted to announce that Maa Press author Ellen Burt has won the 2023 Richard Carver Award. The award is presented annually to an emerging writer in the Kootenays. Burt's letters of nomination highlighted the quality of her work, community involvement and support of the literary community.

From her nomination letter: “Her writing draws the reader into every scene and character and emotion. Ellen is a naturalist! Her connection with the mountains, valleys, plants and animals is always present. Ellen is a poet! Spoken Word is her art and she wins because her poetry and delivery comes from her heart.”

Ellen Burt's beautiful poetic language tells the story of a family and a community within a very particular time and place. What Forever Feels Like navigates issues of family, land, love and loss, and it is an important record and a reflection of the people who worked hard to create community and fr...

Thanks to Raven's Nest for featuring our new book, Captikʷɬ t Swara̓k’xn, the Legend of Frog Mountain. Find it at the Nest, Otter Books, Gaia Rising, the Rossland Museum gift shop, the Grand Forks Gallery gift shop, Kootenay Crate Company, and other fine retailers. Or purchase it online at maapress.ca

Happy Solstice and Indigenous Peoples Day! It may not feel much like summer, but here we are.

Captikʷɬ t Swara̓k’xn, the Legend of Frog Mountain came out recently and is the first book published in Snslxcin, the language dialect of the local Sinixt First Nation. The book is based on the Swara̓k’xn story as told by Sinixt matriarch Eva Orr, and is beautifully illustrated by Amélie Blanchard.

An update on what else is new at the Raven's Nest since May:
We're excited to introduce Leka Design, which has a line of elegant earth-friendly clothing all designed and sewn at their Victoria studio. They use only sustainably sourced, natural textiles such as linen, h**p and organic cotton. If you've not been in lately, please come by to see – and feel – for yourself!

Our summer fashion collection from Kelowna's Brok Boys and Effort's Eco-Essentials of Ontario has been replenished, and we've added some new styles. We've also improved our selection of Swedish-designed Klippan blankets, and filled out our bookshelves and cardracks a bit. As always, thanks for shopping locally! :)

The Creston - Kuskanook highway completed in 1921. To the left is Duck Lake. This short stretch of road made it possible for motorists to cross Kootenay Lake by taking the CPR passenger steamer Nasookin running daily between Nelson and Kuskanook.
