As students return to school, it’s a great time for parents, guardians, and caregivers to talk about personal safety and build routines that keep kids safe and confident throughout the year.

Here are a few safety tips to consider as your child heads back to school:

Be mindful when labeling belongings. Avoid placing your child’s name or nickname prominently on the outside of backpacks, jackets, or lunch kits. This information can be misused by someone trying to build trust with your child.

Create a family safety code word. In the event you need to send someone else to pick up your child unexpectedly, make sure your child knows to only go with that person if they know the family’s safety code word. This simple step helps prevent unsafe situations.

Practice the buddy system. Encourage your child to walk to and from school with a friend whenever possible. There’s safety in numbers, and this also gives them someone to talk to about their day.

Explore helpful tech options. Some families choose to use tools like AirTags or Tiles to help keep track of backpacks or personal items. These can also provide some peace of mind if a child walks to school alone.

Snap a photo at the start of the day. If you’re heading to a large scale school event, consider taking a quick photo of your child in their outfit for the day. It’s a helpful reference in the unlikely event you need to describe them to school staff or first responders.

It’s never too early to teach your child street smarts and how to trust their instincts. For more resources on child safety and prevention, visit MissingKids.ca.
