September 30, 2021 marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The day honours the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Wear orange!! 🧡🧡🧡
Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30.
Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day that honours the children who survived Residential Schools and remembers those who did not. This day relates to the experience of Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwpemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation, on her first day of school, where she arrived dressed in a new orange shirt, which was taken from her. It is now a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

On September 30, we are wearing orange and encourage all Canadians to wear orange to raise awareness of the very tragic legacy of residential schools, and to honour the thousands of Survivors.

The word triumph suggests victory and is often used in the context of overcoming adversity. We selected this theme for our virtual fireworks given the difficult year we have collectively faced due to the pandemic and the brighter future ahead. However, there is a deeper tragedy that we wish to acknowledge, namely the thousands of children who were sent to residential schools and those who never returned. The fireworks display will include an Indigenous cultural segment to honour these precious lives and bring focus to a longstanding injustice that our nation must overcome. We have also provided some ways to educate yourself and how to support Indigenous communities. You can access it all on the snapd HUB app! 🧡

Happy National Indigenous People’s Day! 🪶 This is a day dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

The recent horrific discoveries in former residential schools has brought renewed attention to the ongoing struggle of indigenous peoples in Canada. In the wake of this tragedy it has prompted Canadians to reflect upon this cruel heart-wrenching chapter in our countries history. However, it is important to remember that the fight for indigenous rights reaches far and goes well beyond the scope of residential schools.

A wild herd of Asian elephants is capturing international attention with an epic cross-country journey through southwestern China, where they have crossed some 500 kilometres of terrain for reasons unknown. So intriguing!! 🐘
