[NIAGARA MONTHLY - Dec 31, 2025] Niagara drivers are kindly asked to remember that it is now winter, which is very different from summer. Especially when it comes to driving.
With more dangerous icy roads and snow in the forecast, the Niagara Regional Police Service recently shared this reminder on their official page:
โDrive according to road conditions. Always clear snow and debris from your vehicle before driving. Slow down and allow extra travel time during heavy periods of snow.โ
In the Niagara Region, intersections are the most common locations for serious winter collisions. Reasons include following too closely, failing to yield, and misjudging stopping distance.
Especially helpful for new drivers, here are the five most common winter collision situations in the Niagara Region, based on Niagara Region road safety data and Niagara Regional Police reporting:
1) Rear-end collisions (caused by sliding on snow and ice)
2) Right-angle collisions at intersections
3) Turning collisions, especially left turns at busy intersections
4) Loss-of-control crashes on curves, ramps, bridges, and overpasses
5) Lane-change and sideswipe collisions
Some roads warrant even more care. According to the CAA, the worst Roads in the Niagara Region are Portage Road (Niagara Falls), Lundyโs Lane (Niagara Falls), Facer Street (St. Catharines), Sider Road (Fort Erie), and Miller Road (Port Colborne).
The City of Niagara Falls recommends keeping a basic winter safety kit in your vehicle. These items can help if youโre delayed or stuck in bad weather:
โข Charged phone
โข Water (in a freeze-safe container)
โข Non-perishable food
โข Flashlight
โข Blanket and warm clothes
โข Jumper cables
โข Shovel
โข Traction mats, sand, or kitty litter (non-clumping, non-clay)
โข Candles and a lighter or matches
