The reality of living with a red golden:

The energy isn’t the challenge.

Learning how to support it is.

What I’ve learned is that “high drive” isn’t always about having endless energy. It’s often about having a dog who was bred to do something with that energy.

Swimming days, sniffy walks, enrichment, downtime and room to just be a dog - have taught me more than any “how to tire your dog out” advice ever could.

Because Indy doesn’t just need exercise.

He needs outlets for curiosity.
Opportunities to use his brain.
Freedom to explore.
Space to rest.

Some dogs need exercise.

Indy needs a life that feels full.

Nothing says dock season quite like a golden retriever launching himself into the lake 🛶🌊

Oak Cottage at - a truly dog-friendly cottage on Kashwakamak Lake in Ontario. 🤍🌲

Not all dog-friendly stays feel the same, and this one genuinely felt thoughtful from the moment we arrived.

What stood out most at this pet-friendly cottage in Ontario cottage country:

– no pet fees or surprise guest fees
– raised beds, dishes, tie-outs & treats ready
– open layout made for easy stays with a dog
– slow mornings on Kashwakamak Lake + loon calls
– screened-in gazebo for bug-free cottage evenings
– firewood included + cozy wool blankets
– dark sky stargazing right from the fire pit ✨
– dock views you end up lingering at longer than planned

It’s “dog friendly” but more than that it’s a pet-friendly Ontario cottage stay that feels set up for ease from the start.

Oak Cottage made everything feel unhurried, comfortable, and genuinely welcoming 🩶

POV: you arrive at a truly dog friendly cottage and immediately realize they actually thought about the dogs, not just “allowed” them 🐾

The signs?
• water + food bowls ready to go
• personalized bandanas waiting for your pups
• elevated dog beds for comfort and rest
• towels + blankets specifically for dogs
• p**p bags stocked and easy to find
• an animal air purifier for a fresher, more comfortable stay
• space to decompress, sniff, rest, and just be dogs

It’s the little details that make traveling with dogs feel less stressful and way more welcoming. Especially when you have sensitive, adventurous, or messy dogs 😂

A genuinely dog friendly stay is about creating an environment where both humans and dogs can relax comfortably together and this place absolutely got that right.

Have you ever stayed somewhere that made your dogs feel just as welcome? 🐶✨

Arthur wasn’t too sure about the canoe at first and honestly, that’s pretty normal. New movement, unfamiliar surfaces, and being on the water can take some getting used to for dogs. Letting him explore at his own pace and pairing with extra motivation () helped him realize the canoe was actually a pretty fun place to be 🤎

Now he hops in like a pro. Have your dogs ever been canoeing before? 🛶

Our walks always start the same way: two impatient goldens by the door while I scramble to fill the treat pouch at the last second 😂

Some treats are for training, some are for recall, some are for rewarding check-ins… and some are just because seeing your dogs happy on a walk with you feels like one of life’s smallest, best things.

Relief, as a reactive dog guardian, can feel a lot like grief at first.
Grief for how long your nervous system stayed braced. Grief for the version of you that thought every outing had to end perfectly to be worth it. Grief for the photos you imagined taking, the slow walks you pictured, the moments you cut short because your dog was nearing their threshold and keeping them safe mattered more.

There have been so many times we’ve driven somewhere beautiful only to leave early. So many moments where I tucked the camera away, skipped the “perfect” shot, or changed the plan entirely because Indy needed space, distance, or a quieter exit. And for a long time, that felt like failure.

But lately, relief has been showing up differently.
In realizing success doesn’t always look like staying longer. Sometimes it looks like noticing the stress early and leaving before things unravel. Sometimes it’s choosing regulation over proving something. Sometimes it’s coming home without the weight of guilt sitting in your chest.

I think relief is realizing that protecting your dog’s sense of safety is still a beautiful memory, even if the photos never happened the way you imagined them. And maybe there’s something really tender about learning that the softest moments are usually the ones nobody else sees.
