It’s not always about how many fish you catch or how big they are. Sometimes, the best memories come from simply being out on the water, in the boat, with the people who matter most.
As the years go by, you catch a lot of fish and many of those memories fade. As exciting as it is to finally hook a good fish, get it in the net, snap a quick photo, and watch it swim away, it all happens so fast. If those are the only moments we’re chasing, they’ll disappear just as quickly.
The memories that truly last are the hours spent talking nonsense and just enjoying time outdoors with the people closest to you.
I’m incredibly lucky to spend so much time on the water with my dad, even if I sometimes take it for granted. And I’m even luckier to have made so many fishing memories with my grandpa over the years. I’ll never forget catching my first Musky at 12 years old with him right by my side.
This year, as he turned 83, one of my goals was to catch another Musky with him in the boat. We’ve only managed one trip with him so far, as 8-10 hour days on the water aren’t exactly his favourite. But on that day, Paul managed to land one small Tiger Musky. Not the fish we were hoping for, but it’s a memory I’ll hold onto forever. This photo is one I know I’ll look back on for a long time.
I hope to get out with him again this season and hopefully we can find a good one. But no matter what, the time together is what counts.
Best of luck to everyone out there fishing this weekend and don’t take the time on water for granted.
