There’s a big difference between designing something that looks relaxing and designing something that actually helps people relax.

Our latest KHDS research moved into wellness hospitality with Sky Lagoon in Iceland.

And wellness changes the design problem.

The guest isn’t simply looking at the experience.

They have to physically participate in it.

They change clothes.

Move through spaces.

Enter water.

Follow a sequence.

Navigate privacy.

Understand what happens next.

Decide how social or private they want to be.

That means hospitality has to remove a different kind of friction.

Not just:

“Can I book?”

But also:

“Do I know what I’m supposed to do?”

“Do I feel comfortable doing it?”

“Can I choose not to?”

“Can I get help without feeling exposed?”

This is making me think that great hospitality has two jobs:

Create the experience.

And create enough confidence for the guest to participate in it.

Because something can be visually beautiful, operationally efficient and commercially successful…

and still make the person inside it feel uncertain.

Good hospitality should reduce that uncertainty.

Not by controlling every moment.

By making participation understandable.

Where have you experienced this done really well?

The guest doesn’t experience your departments. They experience one journey.

Yesterday’s KHDS research moved beyond restaurants for the first time and into hotels, using Fogo Island Inn as our first boutique-hotel transfer case.

That changed the scale of the hospitality journey immediately.

A guest might move through:

Discovery → Booking → Travel → Arrival → Check-in → Room → Dining → Activities → Service → Departure.

Internally, those may belong to different teams.

To the guest, they don’t.

It’s all one relationship.

And that led us to one of the strongest lines from the research:

Hospitality responsibility must travel with the guest.

Because every handoff creates risk.

A beautiful hotel can still lose the guest during arrival.

A smooth booking experience can still be undermined by confusing transport.

Great dinner service can still be followed by a poor room-service experience.

The issue isn’t whether each individual touchpoint works.

The issue is whether the care survives the transition between them.

That’s becoming an important idea for us at Kodawa Labs.

Hospitality technology shouldn’t only make individual interactions faster.

It should help maintain context, confidence and continuity throughout the entire guest journey.

Don’t design ten separate touchpoints. Design one connected experience.

Where do you think a hotel’s responsibility for the guest should actually begin?
